Merlin gas tank

Post by pauly » Sat Aug 11, 2012 5:59 am

Having received and fitted a new filler valve to my merlin its became clear that the tank itself is now compromised, the valve itself is no longer leaking but theres still a leak.

I dont know how to fix this, gas tank repair is not within my knowledge.

Where would I even be able to get a replacment gas tank???

Im at a complete loss as to what to do here guys.

The fille valve doesnt seem to be going in or sitting at the right angle, looks like the thread has been pushed into the tank a little bit, all those years of gas filling hvae taken their toll it seems.

Im not sure how to get the tank out, since it resides in the roof I thought it would be a simple process of taking the roof off and just lifting it out but the rook appears to be formed with the rest of the body shell so it looks like Id pretty much have to take the entire loco apart to get to it which Im hesitant to do.

If it is anything like the Merlin Meteor I repaired there is one nut throught the cab rook which holds the gas tank in. you will have to take the gas line out to get the tank out.

perhaps the Meteor had a bigger cab because it all looks so snug and hemmed in, I cant see a way of taking it out with taking magority of the cab apart.

I want to be sure of what Im doing before I mess with this loco

What are the dimensions? Tanks are easy to make and I have a tap to cut the right thread for the filler valve. Post a picture if you can.

That'll be Barry Milner, in which case your loco would be in safe hands, although I believe his services can be on the pricey side

he wouldnt touch it

Iv goen to Finescale who say they can give me a replacement tank but wont fit it to the loco, Ill have to do that myself.

Now can someone please for the love of all that is good tell me how to take a Merlin Mayflower apart so I can get its gas tank out.
I have no desire to take this loco apart and then find myself stuck with a load of useless bits because I can get her back together properly.

Everyone says to just undoe this one screw in the roof to get at the gas tank well Iv tried that and all it does is give the tank some free movement, I cant actually remove it from the cab.

Four screws under the running boards, two each side. Undo the gas pipe at the jet body, should be able to lift body clear but be careful not to catch any wires. Gas tank attached by one nut on roof, cheers Rob

Great, when you come to reassemble it do not do the four screws that hold the body on very tight, the lump of brass attached to the body have a habit of breaking off, hard, but not impossible to reattach without damage to paint work, cheers Rob
