Don't paint it, just darken the wood with something (suitable stain) to make it look like old wood. The mold marks only add to the character.

That's a lovely wagon - so I reckon it deserves to look as realistic as possible, which means no bare brass. Personally I'd paint the outside (perhaps rubbing some back to bare wood), then dirty it all up...

I would stain over the mould to give that wonderful dirty look. Paint all the bare brass and paint wheels and axle boxes.

I'd go with a couple of coats of watered down grey paint so it looks as though it once saw a paint shop, some rust streaks on the hinges and body metalwork, then some rusty-black mix on the running gear. Grotty - like an old 'M' wagon!
