Russell

Post by taliesin001 » Sat Mar 31, 2012 11:59 pm

I recieved my cut down version of russell today, being the first time id seen it. i have to say im very pleased, with an endless list of modifications due to the roundhouse model being completely innacurate, my grandad has made no compromises in making this correct. just thought id share the pictures here, the last photo shows it posing along with three of the four coaches that make up the 'rainbow' train.

Very nice model, but the subject matter is definitely in the Marmite category for me. ;)
I much prefer the "un-modded" version of the original, but that's just personal taste - I can still appreciate your loco for what it is :D

Wow, that completely changes the look of the engine. I'm not entirely sure which version I would like better if they were both full-size and standing next to one another. But the new version certainly looks more like a full-size prototype. Your grandfather certainly knows how to make a good-looking model. It even looks like he's done something to the valve gear, like smaller bolts and rounder edges or something. I like it. The coaches look good too.

that does look good. as you say the roundhouse one does look a bit odd, but i will have to make do with it.

To be honest I also much prefer the origional profile, but I wanted something that isnt usually modelled, which is why I went for that era. And yes, all the valve gear has been pretty much remade, making it alot thinner than before, I'm glad you noticed!

"Beautiful" is perhaps the wrong word for a cut-down Russell, but it's an impressive conversion and should turn a few heads at steam-ups  Does the new gas tank affect the running time?

That's a very nice loco (and train) - something DEFINITELY out of the ordinary!

Actually the more I look at it, the more I like your model. If you like the little figures some people put in their models, I think it would highlight the shortness of the cab and the little cut-outs they put in there for the driver to stand up in. I'm assuming they cut the cab down to give it clearance through a tunnel or something?

Also I can't find the reverse lever in the cab of your loco, but the regulator doesn't seem to have a servo. Is it R/C or manual? I like the wood decking in the cab, I might help myself to that idea and put a wood floor in my "billy".

To answer the questions, the loco is RC but hasnt been entirely fitted yet, so I havent run it and therefore cant say how much effect the new gas tank will have. Cant wait to give it a go though!

Hey, I like this. And it's likely unique given most people's perference for the full-size dealie.

The 'cut down' look seems to work really well for it. Can't figure why but eh. :)

Quite a bit more "chunky" and looks right. The as built version looks just too tall and too big for 16mm. Unfortunately, a lot of RH stuff and most everything made by Accucraft suffer from this.

A bit of a trade-off tho for bigger boilers and longer run-times and the ability to re-gauge between 32 and 45mm.

I've never bothered to measure my 16mm rolling stock and the height of my locomotive to see if the locomotive is excessively oversized. I have one "15mm" scale wagon however, and its roof is exactly the height of the locomotive. I've noticed that many times the locomotives tower over the rolling stock on the real narrow gauge railways too.

This version of Russel does match the wagons nicely though. There must have been a tunnel on the line that made the shortening necessary.

yes the loco was origionally cut down so that it could run on the ffestiniog to blaenau, however the modification still failed

What, you mean after all that work, it still wouldn't fit through the tunnel? That must have been disappointing.

I like it a lot. Just looks superb, can I borrow your grandad?

It would fit, just, but with absolutely no room to spare. This meant that in the event of a failure in the tunnel the crew wouldn't have enough wriggle room to dismount and go forward on foot to get help- a potentially dangerous situation and not one they could live with.

ISTR that in the first preservation rebuild there were remains of a BFO scar down one side (probably from Garnedd) and I have seen some discussion somewhere about whether or not Russell ever made it to TyG. I think not, but it's a long while since I've looked at that bit of paperwork.
