I wonder what this is ... ?

Post by mhlr » Thu Jun 10, 2010 5:43 pm

All day today, I've been waiting for the door knocker. I've heard it about 5 times today, ran to it each time in anticipation, then to find it's something else, or something annoying. Then the final knock came, a guy wanting me to sign a electronic device, then passed me this parcel out the back of his van...

"WHERE'S THE BLOODY KNIFE?!"     (no not bloody in that sense!)

"Oooooooh must be a steam engine!"

Guess what it is yet?!

Surely you can now!

I look forward to the pics and video of it running!

Yep, 'Linda' it is. I would love to acheive something like Sir Haydn has done, with the oil tank in the tender and cab back on it, wood floor, Penryn lining (possibly TonyW's over winter at somepoint), red cranks and reversing arm etc. Maybe even a DJB whistle! I'll probably put 'MHLR' on the tender sides though instead of FfR crest, as it's running on the MHLR as a 'Penryn Hunslet' (notice the lack of the 'h', as it's spelt like that down here, very near me! ).

The first things to do though are, to paint the cranks and reversing arm red (plus the nameplate backgrounds), stick nameplates on with silicon, lettering or crest on tender, and maybe add the wooden floor...

All that after some STEAMY TIME though!

I bought the bucket extra, but the FfR version comes with the working lamp. ;)

Anyway, I've been thinking again, should I name it 'Linda', bearing in mind its my favourite NG loco, or something else? I have "River Helford" name plates off the IP Jack, so I could call it that... any suggestions?

I would call it Linda,
1) Because you have the nameplates
2)It's your favourite engine
3)Linda (aand other FR locos) are generally awsome.
:D
Thanks
Jack

Very nice!

Good look fitting a whistle to it though!
I have thought about it along with Tony and the guy from DJB (sorry forgotten his name!) and in the end we went for the option of fitting one to my Lady Anne instead as the cab would have just been full of clutter, which doesn't look good on an open cab.

I still need to get round to fitting a wooden floor to mine! along with fitting the new nameplates and eventually choppers when i get them from a friend (you can't use accy ones without modifiying them)

Name it as Linda, keep it as Linda!

Linda is far more better than Blanche, in EVERY single way and also the way your spelling Penrhyn means that it would be said like "Penrun"

Now runs for cover before a Blache vs. Linda war starts off!

Part of me feels that if you're running the engine with your own railway's initials on the tender, you should give it your own name.

But having written this into my railway's fictitious history I can't talk...
It so happened that at this time, the Hunslet Engine Co. in Leeds had received an order for a 2' gauge 2-6-2T for the Portmadoc, Beddgelert and South Snowdon Railway. Russell Smith [founder of the Misbourne Valley Railway] had visited Hunslet and seen the drawings for this engine; he decided that the design would be suitable for the MVR, and also hoped to take advantage of economies of scale, so he placed an order for a similar loco. The grateful citizens of Rutton [the MVR's headquarters] suggested that the engine should be named after Mr. Smith, so, by strange coincidence, both engines ended up being called Russell!
Oh, and I almost forgot to say - beautiful engine, I'm very jealous!

Shinyyy!! Liking it lots Pete.

I look forward to going out on the Linda when it comes back in to traffic, but I think I'll always prefer the Blanche because it just makes such an awsome noise. It was sounding quite wet yesterday, and the noise coming from the smokebox was just deafening.
