Timing :( Help please :)

Hi,

i think the timing has gone out on my accucraft edrig as it rolls freely and everything is probperly oiled yet when under steam it smoothly run its very jerky

can anyone tell me how to get it back into time ?

The piston valves are adjustable and when fully in should only just come up to the scribed line on the piston valve. You can adjust how far it goes in and out with the little bolts on the screw threaded shaft. One that is done check that the reverser plunger goes in as far as the scribed line when fully forwards and no further. Once again adjust this using the little nuts and have a test run. You may be pleasantly surprised. Then again you might not. It works on River Butley which regularly goes out of time. I also have to tighten up the crank shafts on the axils from time to time which helps.

as above- but nip the locknuts up so there just over finger tight- check how it runs- if its all good a drop of loctite on the threads should keep the timing in place so it doesnt have to be readjusted. but can be undone if you need to service it- btw i have a spare piston valve if you want it at easter?

while you do it- clean the valves with your mums duster(lint free) you dont want muck in there. smear some steam oil on the valves to stop scoring and free it up- they could be scoring as the lubrication to them isnt brill like a slidevalve steam chest. relying on it being dumped and dragged about- with gravity an all.

did you check the steampipes as it was blowing off and had no power at llechy. is the safety valve at the right pressure?- dont trust the pressuregauge unless you know it to be accurate.

Steam pipe is clear , and as for pressure safty valve i have no idea it feathers at 40 but stays at that until 60psi then starts to properly blow off
