Afternoon all,

There's a little more progress to report on the Russell project.

Earlier in the week I painted the boiler bands. As suggested by Laal Ratty I used a coat of primer, then orange gloss, then a strip of black Trimline, followed by satin varnish. Putting the Trimline on was quite a relief - the bands looked horrific in plain orange! Anyway, here's what they looked like before I varnished...

I've been working away on other bits too, including fabricating brake pipes - thanks for the tips on hole drilling, I managed three, all in the right place! Everything's painted now and this afternoon I took advantage of the fact that my poor wife's poorly and in bed to borrow her oven and give all the bits of engine a final bake before reassembly:

I hope to put it all back together this week - then I'll have to retouch all the screws etc and maybe add a little light weathering before its finished. Or finished-ish - it still needs a wooden box for sand, red paint on the cranks, re-painting and lining the cylinders, a crew, etc etc...

Cheers,

Andrew.

The lining really makes it pop. Love it!

The boiler bands look good, that whole thing should look splendid when it's back in one piece.

Oops, sorry, experimenting with Photobucket and moved the Russell pics into another folder today without thinking of the consequences. That'll mean some of the photos on my railway construction thread have disappeared too - I'll try to sort 'em all tomorrow...

This evening I've painted the last few bits and bobs and am currently fitting Locoworks inner tanks, ready for re-assembly. When I took Russell apart I was uncharacteristically careful and dutifully noted down which nut, bolt and screw went where, with diagrams. Now the time's come I find I've lost the scrap of paper I wrote it all on... The road to Hell and all that...

Somehow that was inevitable, but as a fellow-sufferer of the gods of happenstance, my heart skipped a beat when I read that. Usually, by the time I´ve found the list, I´ve lost the screws ...

Okey dokey, photos sorted... Must remember to organise them neatly into folders before linking to them...

I'm worried now re losing stuff, haven't actually looked for the screws etc yet... fingers crossed!

The road to Hell and all that...
Surely is it not a "Highway to Hell"? ;)
Also, your Russell looks incredible (not envious, honest!)

Glad you like it! I put it back together last night and am pretty pleased with it - I'd only lost two screws too! They're the ones that hold secure the back of the cab to the footplate floor if anyone happens to know what sort I need, but it seems OK without 'em, in fact I wonder whether I never had them in the first place.

Photos will follow when I've touched up the paint that's missing from screw heads etc and added a little light weathering. Then it'll be a case of adding real weathering by steaming the thing - the rumour on shed is that it might be rostered to power a works train this weekend...

Evening all,

I think it's finished, for now at least. I've just taken Russell outside and although the light was fading fast I hope these pictures give you an idea of the end result:

I hope you like it - I'm pretty pleased with the end result. And very grateful to all who've contributed support and ideas on this thread.

I hope to raise steam tomorrow. And then all of my careful paintwork will be splattered with oil and I can stop being precious about it and move on to the next thing...

All the best,

Andrew.

Very nice indeed, and truly stunning considering that its the first time you've used a lining pen!

That´s a beautiful looking Russell you´ve got yourself there - excellent painting job. Now you´ve provoked me into overalling my one - it must be over ten years old now and could do with a wash and brush up.
