I've not seen a Roy Woods one yet, but I've seen a couple of PPS ones, and they can be a bit on the wild side. I would expect that Roy would be looking to improve the running characteristics if he hasn't already done so

Erm I met Roy at the Exeter show. Great guy. I did see one and it was rather sweet. I think with any non geared Oscillator getting it to run slow is an art. One I enjoy. They run quick but with practice they can be made to run slower. Mamod Ltd do a geared version which has its faults but is now slower (See other forum pages) But for me the simple strong Oscillators get the nod. Size wise this is more 7/8ths with the large sides. Having said that I'm 16mm scale and considering one as I'm no rivet counter.

I mentioned the roy woods one as it would of hopefully been better than the mamod brunel which i have already seen and wasnt really that happy with the flywheel arrangement compared to RW dewinton which is a twin piston type and self starting..I would be getting one with chuffer and the wood cladding as the cladding does make them look better (my view others may disagree) my limiting factor is spare funds as if I spend £600+ SWMBO might climb the wall or bury me under foundations of planned railway and what I have saved/sold items since xmas would pay for a dewinton with a bit of cash left over for a bit more track

I personally like the simplicity of an oscillator. When you get a good steady run out of it, which takes time and practice, it is very satisfying. If it was my only loco, I'm not sure a Roundhouse or Accucraft would come first, on versatility alone. These Roy woods are good mind and will always be something of worth. I think if you have weighed the odds then it is personal choice. Steam is fun with the better makes. A poor running old loco or very cheap nasty job can be a frustration, I have tired both and it was no fun at all. The dewinton will run and run well, with practice. Roundhouse and Accucraft are easier to fire and more versatile, but I do like a GOOD oscillator. Dewinton is good.

Hi Jay1976
Well first I have to say that Roy Wood is a close friend of mine and when he bought the PPS loco designs, I did think he was a little mad!

Then when I saw what he had done - especially re-plumbing it and adding the Chuffer resonator - I just fell in love with this loco!

Here is the first film I made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cv9544aNnI

Here is the second film with the loco running as 7/8ths scale:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibtWtl-ZWf4

I ended up buying the previous PPS version that had been converted to radio control. I modified it quite a bit and it runs as 7/8ths scale. Here it is on its own:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y6cFSLIdhY

And here it is running with Roy's test loco:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmldyuSmPVk

It is a powerful loco, but inevitably, it prefers a relatively level track if running manually. Roy hand builds and tests every loco down here in Dorset and I know he has had great feedback from his many customers.

Have a chat with him if you want to know anything about the loco.
Cheers
Chris

I´ve got one of Roy´s De Wintons and can only say good things about it. Needs running in, like all locos, and I´d advise then to check that nothing has worked itself loose (as you would in any case). Very reasonable price too.

a member at our club has one, said it needed running in to settle down but it looked fine to me when I saw it a few weeks ago.
