Like the red livery... Father Christmas brought me one of these too, but mine will be finished in plain old black, with rusty streaks. I've got a couple other things to finish first but am looking forward to this one - thanks for the tips!
Are you planning any restrictions on where it's placed in the train - not next to the loco, not next to oil tanks/drums etc? Not sure what real life restrictions were? "Not to be loose or hump shunted"?! My kids quite like me to set them shunting puzzles so it could be good fun to make sure they avoid blowing up the GPV...
Cheers,
Andrew.

Just done a little Googling and found these (GW) rules on a modelling site:MDLR:95546 wrote:On the old (garden) MDLR it ran as a single vehicle behind a Diesel loco up the dale as the first train of the day, and was usually worked back as a single vehicle as the last train of the day, but I see no reason why it couldn't have been worked back with the rest of the line's general freight.
Peacetime movements :
GPVs (telegraph code CONE) had to be positioned as far as as possible from the loco, the brake van and any other vehicles marked 'inflammable'
no more than five GPVs coupled together marshalled at the rear
no working thru the Severn Tunnel
each GPV limited to 10,000 lbs of explosives (sheeted OPENs limited to 2,240 lbs)
loading and unloading to take place outside goods sheds
Additionally during WWI & WWII :
each GPV limited to 16,000 lbs of explosives (sheeted OPENs limited to 4,000 lbs)
up to 60 GPVs could make up a gvt explosives train
So there we go. Doubt those were followed on NG lines, but it'll keep the children occupied when we play at shunting...
Actually I saw a GWR train following those rules EXACTLY on the GlosWarks a few years ago - Saddle Tank 813 pulling a train consisting of just a Great Western GPV and a Toad brake, with the GPV thus positioned "as far as possible from the loco and brake van"! The little train was heading up the line to offer rides at Cheltenham Race Course during a gala - presumably passengers rode in the Toad rather than the GPV...
Cheers,
Andrew.
