The horse is legless to give room for the motor and sound card

With that wonderful rivet detail, I cannot imagine a real horse would ever stand still in still in such a small wagon. :D Knowing horses like I do, it would almost certainly injure itself escaping.

I think they put a bag over the horses head. They make out they had a food bag round their neck to eat from. If they said otherwise in the literature it would upset the animal cruelty folks

That makes sense, still it must have been one heck of a ride for them.

It would be more cruel not to put a head of the horses head to calm it. It was and is a common trick when you have a horse which is a bit skittish. Unfortunately most of the animal rights folks know naff all about handling animals.

Clever beasts, horses and ponies.

When I started work for the Coal Board there were still some guys about who had worked as Ostlers. They loved the ponies they worked with (well, most of them!) and there was a real rapport between the men and the animals.

Most of the ponies could count and new exactly how many tubs they were allowed to pull on each district. They could hear the couplings pick up as they set off and one clink too many resulted in everything coming to a stand until the Ostlers unclipped a tub!

One of the ponies ( I forget which pit it was at) had been taught the knack of rolling onto a manriding conveyor and tucking his legs in. I didn't believe this at first but eventually heard the same story from two or three independent sources. That's a trick that has to take a pretty fearless animal to learn.

One of the funniest stories I was told concerned a pony and his Ostler who got on particularly well, to the point of playing tricks on each other. The ponies party piece involved a section of gate road where the roof was particularly low and the clearances very tight. Ostlers were't allowed to ride on the ponies, nor were they supposed to ride in the tubs, but on this section of road way jumping in the first tub was really the only way to keep hold of the reins. Almost every time they went through this section the pony would slow right down and let rip, knowing the Ostler was in the first tub and be unable to escape into fresh air. One clear the pony used to look round at the Ostler, bare his teeth and whinney with laughter!
"Smith! Why do you only come to work four days a week?
"'cause I can't manage on three gaffer!"
