this is scratchbuilt, hes designed it and ran it through a lasercutter and then put it together

just because the more advanced tools make it easier doesnt make it any less valid

Thank you Pauly and I must say after sticking countless thousands of Cambrian rivets onto my earlier models I'd much rather draw out the CAD and print them.

Have you got a pic of them in the finished article So model making has become a CAD programme more time on the pc less time putting it together. A sign of changing times.

There not engraved, this is one of the tank end straps it's printed in one piece, see the photos at the start of this topic.

the only difference between doing it this way and carving each piece out yourself from raw wood is this gives more reliable replicatable results easier and quicker, you are limited only by your imagination and knowledge of the CAD programming.

It is not cheating or anyless valid as modelling

as the world advances so will our tools

No its not cheating and its not model making its model engineering using technology that without otherwise the maker would not be able to produce it.

A model maker is one that uses handtools and no machinery to produce a model therefore acquiring a skill.

so when I use my pillar drill to drill holes in my wagon frames instead of a hand crank drill Im no longer modelling?

When I use my bench saw to cut the wood instead of a junior hacksaw Im no longer modelling?

and who says CAD programming isnt a skill?

The difference between model engineering and model making isn't the tools you use, it's the process you use and the parts you produce. Mike has done both with this, using the engineering to utilise the cad but also model making by actually putting it together and adding the detail.

I'm using a laser cutter for a lot of 16mm stuff now. It speeds things up, and always me to build thjngs I wouldn't have the chance to kther wise. Been a teenager I've grown up with technology, but very much still impressed and in awe of those who make cracking models with simple tools. Saying that, my battery ppwered quarry hunslet still requires a lot of work after lasering the main hits.

Both models are great, I wish I had the time to produce either, but hey!
I like the the idea of scratch building wagons, but not having the time to procure all the bits and pieces necessary, makes kits a great alternative for me.
