The G&SLR's first locomotive

Post by Sylvian Tennant » Mon Mar 04, 2013 1:16 am

In all honest, that's a bit of a lie as I have yet to have any locomotive built, but I'm working on one.

For a more ranty and up to date blog, please visit http://sylviantennantmodelling.wordpress.com/

The basic idea is one of those Toby Tram rip offs you always see and I'll be using an IP engineering chassis with speed controller.

So far I've built it up and wired it, then re-wired it when I concluded that I wasn't happy with the original wire or my soldering effort and I found prettier wires than the ones supplied.

It's now been mostly painted (just the cranks and coupling rods to paint up) and tested. Next up: The boy :S!

I will be most happy for feedback.

So far, I've painted her up and after a slight issue after realising 3 in 1 oil wasn't the best to use (thank you Enginehouse). I'm back in the game.

Last night, I made a start on the lower body: the buffer beams, footplate and side skirts.

and now, it's snowing!

Thank you, 906733
Yeah I'm keeping a close eye on situations like that as well at the plastic gears too.

So far I have managed to put the skirting on today. Looking at ways I can make a pair of cow catchers.

So I've made the cow catchers... little buggers they were!

In fact I've almost finished the chassis, really just the floorboards to make.

Then, god knows! The actual boiler? or the outer body... I just don't know! For a more insightful and ranty update, follow my blog below :)

Looking very smart - seems a shame to cover up the cly cranks completely - will you have removable hatches?

Oh most defiantly, it was the first thing I was thinking of to be honest.

Two reasons, first reason, the cranks look so cool running around and many of these trams had their skirts, access panels removed later in life.

Secondly, I need access to the on/off reverse switches which are a tad fiddly but my nimble fingers manage okay.

The only thing I missed out was to keep panels free to pull out but held firming to the sides, I added some soft polystyrene foam which is glued in and once the pins have bedded in are easy to pull out but firm.

So far I've added floor planking and some scrap bits of wood to hold the battery box in place and I've made a start on the body.

I've managed to get most of the chassis painted now... I really need to take a look at the body.
