High pitch motor noise with RC battery powered locos
Hi
I wonder if anyone has experienced any motor noise (interference) which consists of a high pitch wine that occurs when i accelerate the throttles on my battery powered radio control G1 GWR 48xx and 57xx and if so is it possible to get rid of this somehow? (The motors have been modified with 0.1uF capacitors but this seems to make no difference).
PS Are there any garden railway enthusiasts in the Exeter area-would be great to meet up.

Noise from motors

Thanks ver much for your reply. I have just been in touch with Mike from Chuffed to Bits and he says that it is due to the motor windings being non encapsulated and the use of a pwm voltage ccontrol unit. I must say I am a very disappointed because the noise is bad enough to detract from the enjoyment of running the trains. I am wondering now if I should change the motors (rather not they are really nice) or possibly cheaper get alternative (non pwm if available) control units. To answer your question the noise is worst when the motors are under load (ie starting off and then the noise quietens considerably once the locos are running. I get the same phenomenon in both my 48xx and 57xx locos but not my dmu (both have x50v, 0.1uF capacitors fitted) but not my dmu.
Any comments ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Yes I actually added the capacitors in the vain hope that that would solve the problem but no luck with that unfortunately.

Noisy motor
Hi again.
Well i have spent the last couple of hours taking a Brian Jones MAC5 out of another loco and connecting it to the Pannier and guess what ...the noise has gone. I guess that either the extra circuitry in the MAC5 is different or its is working on different principles. Either way I am pleased but it looks as if I am going to have to fork out extra cash for another MAC5 (which costs a fair bit more than the microloco unit and is much bigger!). Anyway there is a prewired unused Chuffed to bits micro loco control unit that was intended for the 48xx if anyone is interested and makes a sensible offer. I will keep the used micro loco unit for a rainy day in case I ever get around to using the surplus motor from my dmu in another locomotive.
