Born with a whistle.

Post by benchmark » Sun Jun 10, 2012 3:29 pm

I have seen some models with whistles in youtube videos, are they all modifications or do some models come with this function from the factor?

What live steam model is sold with a whistle that is rc controlled?

Thanks Keith, that answers my question well.

Do the whistles take quite a bit of water and pressure out the boiler?
Been thinking about one, however I might go down the electronic path...

Right, sounds a bit complicated then, I think I will look into putting a speaker into my loco somehow...

The John Campbell whistle sounds fantastic, £200 is a little over budget at the moment though...

I have looked at the DJB ones, although they don't seem to sound particularly good, then again I would love mine to sound like an A4 chime

My DJB whistle sounded rubbish when I first had it fitted and then I played around with the position of it and now it sounds fine.

An electric whistle in this scale is no substitute for a working one ;)

Cheers,

Tom

How do you play with the position of it? Like where you put it in the loco?

I'd recommend making your own whistle and whistle valve. It would be an excellent lead-in to loco building and is enormously satisfying.

GR did an article on making whistles which was quite good. I'll try and dig it out tonight.

Cheers,

Tom

I install and sometimes even scratch build make my own whistles on my steam boats. The problem with locomotives is the lack of space and one is greatly limited by cosmetic variations from the originals.

here is an example of one of my boats with a servo controlled whistle

That is a very nice model.

Here are two of my home made whistles:-

This one is my 16mm scale De Winton - "Rubeus"

<object width="480" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xj6Jf8MqNIY?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xj6Jf8MqNIY?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

And, this one is on my large scale De Winton - "Jack"

<object width="480" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LNQcoanpK18?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LNQcoanpK18?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Both whistles are stowed under the bunkers.

Best wishes,
Dave.

Nice whistle on the Dewinton , again its boiler bears a similarity to those on a steam boat, its much more difficult to install a whistle on a regular outline loco without distorting its aesthetics .
