Descaling

My loco [Edrig] experienced a blocked regulator valve. Blew it out and its fine now but wondered where the sediment came from? Wondered if a descale is called for and if anyone had any useful tips about what to use and how to generally go about it.

I use Kilrock on the big 7 1/4" locos which will work on 16mm too. It comes in small bottles. Pop a load in the boiler, top off with water, heat it up and get up steam but keep it from blowing off. Do that for 25 mins or so and flush it all out when cold, it should get the worst of it.

I am going to give the Kilrock stuff a go as well.

Am I right in saying that the loco should not be moved with this stuff in the boiler as it could cause problems? Just let it heat up for a while and the drain once cool?

Cheers,
