If your having that problem then i would light the lighter first and slowly open up the gas. If that doesn't work shut the smokebox door, light the lighter above the chimney, and slowly open the gas that way, it should just suck the flame down and light the fire with a loud bang! It's that way i light mine, as i can't open the door anymore!
What sort of lighter do you have, a normal lighter or one with a long spout sort of thing?

Turn the bloody gas down!
From a full tank:
- Open the gas reg for a few seconds. Close it and give it a little while to clear.
- Light a match/ lighter and hold at the smokebox door
- Gradually open the gas regulator until it catches and pops back.
You should only need to open it a little way, they aren't very sensitive valves. Over half a turn is too far.
If it still doesn't work, or you are having to open it much further than that, there might be a partial blockage in the jet- bit of PTFE tape or something.
There is no reason to burn the smokebox door- if you are burning the paint you are doing it wrong. I assume it's an earlier one without the heat shield inside the door?

or a cheeky method I do which is not too advisable, if the flame is stocking around and not popping back and your loco has a terrible gas control valve (regners!) I give a short sharp blow down the chimney and that usually pushes the flame back to where it should be. Don't burn yourself...

All the more reason to take care with it- it only takes a very slight movement to make a difference!
It does not burn the smokebox door regardless- Accucraft burners are pants, I know, I did my dissertation on them (fit a mesh, it's better- a 99p stainless steel spatter guard from Wilkinson's works a treat) but they aren't that bad- if you are burning the door the gas is too high or you are closing the door before it's had a chance to settle down.

Sir haydn
the problem lies in the design of the gas tank itself. roundhouse have an air gap at the top of their tanks. this stops the tank filling to the brim and letting liquid gas into the burner.Accucraft dont have this air gap and on first light up you get a rush of liquid gas causing the irregualar buring at first. the only cure for this could be to let a little gas through before lighting.

It's 90733 (a signficant number) ;) I think i got mine at a simalar time to dowyddelanlightrail. but my paint hasn't come off yet, only bubbled slightly in the smallest patch ever.Endless, Nameless wrote:DolwyddelanLightRail, isn't yours a fairly new one (same with 90210 or whatever it is) with the thick alloy flame guard/ heat shield inside the door? If so you definitely shouldn't be torching the paint.
Thanks

Yep, got it in November! The reason why the paint came off was cause on it's third run the burner has a special moment and it would only stay alight (just) when it was on high, then at the end the paint started to come off.90733 wrote:It's 90733 (a signficant number) ;) I think i got mine at a simalar time to dowyddelanlightrail. but my paint hasn't come off yet, only bubbled slightly in the smallest patch ever.Endless, Nameless wrote:DolwyddelanLightRail, isn't yours a fairly new one (same with 90210 or whatever it is) with the thick alloy flame guard/ heat shield inside the door? The burner is quite good now, bit iffy when first lit up but after a while it's OK, anyways, i'm starting to like it like that now!

On my dads caradoc, it is like that too... paint still hasnt come off though and there is no paint shield! I sugest doing what Mr B says. Light it from the chimney and then wait a second before carefully blowing it down... It either goes out or pops back into the burner!
I find this also works with my Merlin loco, whose burner is not the best...
Or just get a roundhouse... LMAO

A REAL handy tip to try with Accy burners:-
Don't "fill" the gas tank!
Just give it a quick squirt of gas (after oiling and watering as normal) and light up - hold a flame into the smokebox then crack open the gas regulator.
Let this warm everything through (it also starts to heat the boiler, so you're on the way to raising pressure)
Shut the gas off and then fill the gas tank. Allow excess fumes to dissipate and light up again - should be no "flame thrower effect" and the full gas tank will give you a longer run on that "pre-heated" boiler too!

I've done simular to this when i know that i'm not going to be using LOTS of steam etc just on light freight workings etc. Tis quite useful!Narrow Minded wrote:A REAL handy tip to try with Accy burners:-
