Contents Insurance Puzzler

Whilst renewing building and contents insurance I was told by my broker that live steam locos wouldn't be covered as they have an " engine ". Has anybody else come across this? They are kept in house so relatively safe but it appears the risk has been accentuated.....
Not sure what to do next but Mrs Broom is adamant she is not doing a threesome with Katie..... :( :(

Funny that one, I don't have my engines listed separately but I have been told they are covered as individual items up to the value of £2k each. I would be tempted to query that one with your broker or the insurance provider themselves.

The problem is that insurance companies started out as protection rackets and haven't really changed. Any thing they can do to get out of paying a claim they will do.

No, but my insurance broker asked whether the track was electric. When I said no, he replied "Well that´s all right then." Not wishing to encourage him, I simply nodded. I don´t think he knew that I was burning gas in a confined space to boil water in a pressure vessel, and I certainly wasn´t going to get into that conversation.

I purchased my first annuity this year. In the accompanying paperwork there was a form to record any medical conditions/medication which may qualify for an enhanced annuity.

With nothing ventured nothing gained I went through 2 lengthy phone calls to be advised that my medical conditions/medication were not eligible for any enhancement.

Yet when trying to get travel insurance for a worldwide trip next month these same insurance companies would not cover those medical conditions/medication without prior declaration and an extra premium.

You just cannot win either way!

Have a look at Walker Midgley. I've got all my stuff insured with them big and small.

Thanks Dan I think I'll try them, just to be sure. As you say Chris they want to win all ways up.

My wife contacted the broker as our original quote was £435, the broker did 204 and when I went to cancel the original company would do 293. If they had done that in the first place we would have probably stayed put!

We had some financial advice from an ex Lloyds Bank employee and while setting out our outgoings the cost of our Lloyds Home Insurance was questioned. We had just kept with them over a long period. It turned out it had nearly doubled. We found equivalent cover for just over half the cost of the Lloyds policy. When we cancelled the Lloyds policy we were contacted very quickly and were promised better prices. I asked them to justify nearly doubling the cost without any change to the cover and they couldn't. I told them that loyalty works both ways and refused to go back to them. Though I have been told if I wait 12 months I would be treated as a new customer and offered good rates.
I am looking into the new scheme making it simpler to change banks more often.
