Roundhouse Argyll joins the fleet

Post by Gremlin » Thu Oct 23, 2014 12:51 pm

I do like the look of this loco and decided to keep an eye out for one. This was a recent auction site purchase and glad to say it's a very nice engine. Couple of small niggles but only general maintenance. The syphon tube was blocked, wonder why it blew off at 20, better now. one of the valve linkage screws came out, no problem but the valve probably moved oo I moved it so timing was a tad off, but did that after a run this morning. A cylinder was loose so need to change the cheese head screws.
The only thing is the sand dome mechanism is gone but should be able to make something up for that. It was in need of a clean, nothing bad just a coating of oily splatter from the chimney. It was set to 45MM but a call to Roundhouse produced a 32mm pony wheel set, I think the postage and VAT was more than the part.
First run was ok but the next should be better with the timing adjusted,
Happy with the old chap, must find out the age.

Just checked my box of Roundhouse Body Parts (oooh errr...) and I have one here if you want it. Send me a PM if you are interested.

I have always liked these as well David and looks good in green.

How does it cope on the Peco curves 2ft 6" curves?

If it's the one with the chip on the back of the cab that was kicking around on ebay you've got a bargain there!

Thanks Tony, Pm sent

Tom, it did slow on two of my corners but went round ok and fine through the smaller peco points. I'll try again with the timing adjusted see if it's any different.

Yes it was the recent ebay offering, Bought Sunday and in my hands 10am Tuesday, pretty good service. With the scratch on the back and looking a little dowdy in the photos, plus I wasn't sure if I loved the colour, I thought a repaint might be in order. However after a degrease with paraffin the paintwork was actually in really nice condition. So I'll run it as is and see how I feel about the colour, it's growing on me, can touch in the scratch. I think a matt roof and smokebox will be be done and maybe black tanktops. Then I might think about a lining job that would suit the green, I think it's gamboge, yellow with a black edge maybe?

I'd been watching the auction all week, shall I shan't I, was in two minds. So I decided to bid at the end if it hadn't gone up any more. I was outside with my telescope when it got cloudy so I packed up, only remembering the time as I came in.
5 Mins to go, quick turn on PC, still the same price, yes ,no - what to do. I placed one next bid at the end and was pleased when I won, and even more pleased when it arrived and was better than expected.
So in short, yes I'm happy and probably was a bargain considering current prices.

I blame Ace, I remember his thread on Argyll and thought from then it would be a nice loco to own.

:D :D

A month on and spot the differences, took a week to do the lining and quite happy with the way it's turned out. Still got the scratch on the back of the cab but will have to wait for a show as people can't send paint through the post. Looking forward to running at the weekend.

Amazing what a little bit of paint can do! I've never been very keen on that gamboge colour but the matt black and lining does wonders. Looks very nice now.

Like it David very much, great job.

A smaller pressure gauge would reduce it's appearence in the cab?

I've always thought that they were very nicely proportioned locos and that lining job really enhances the looks.

Very nice, the lining is spot on. Are the tank tops matt as well?

I agree about the colour, not one of my faves but I think the cream lining works well with it. There's 4 different blacks in there,  matt tank tops, Stove black for the roof & smoke box, satin for the panels edges and satin varnish over the running boards. It's given the old chap a new lease of life.

I have enough trouble seeing the pressure gauge as it is with my eyes so although a smaller one would look better I'd have even less idea what it said :D

It's a handsome chunky loco Dave.
Is that colour really gamboge?
I always thought gamboge was the colour of the loco featured on the
Any Questions page on the 16mm soc website.

Ah yes, I see. Lovely colour I reckon. Shame they have dropped it from the range.
