Yes. No. Not sure.

FWIW - I'm a long term NWNG fan and did the last repaint of the 12¼ version into the Barge's black and red livery.

There's something that doesn't look quite right - not sure what it is - may be that the boiler and tank are parallel, dunno.

I've never quite got my head round the inclined boiler/tanks thing. I've got a copy of Boyd in front of me which says that "tradition has it that the boiler was inclined to offset the [Bryngwyn] branch's gradient, but if the drawings are to be believed this was not so". And, indeed, the drawings reproduced in Boyd do show straight boiler and tanks, but he also has a picture of the loco sitting by Dinas 'box where they look decidedly wonky... On the other hand, in the "wardrobe photo" of the NWNGR double-header (which I've been looking at a fair bit 'cos I'm contemplating making one of the little 4-wheeled carriages), all looks pretty parallel...

Call me conventional, but it's a more attractive loco with everything neatly in line, and probably likely to sell better from RH's point of view. I shan't be getting one, but that's not because I wouldn't like to...

Andrew.

Old Images for those who wonder what it looks like. I like the Victorian Shaped smoke box. I wonder whether towing would be fine but pulling round tight curves would push the stock off due overhang?

I though I'd be content with one loco but the eye and mind wander. Shame the funds don't follow, or is it?[/url]

Thanks for the photos - but do you see what I mean re the boiler/tank and their incline. of lack of?

In the first few photos they look parallel with the running plate - in the third the smokebox end seems to be higher than the cab end. I'm no engineer (as the rest of this post may make painfully obvious), but is it possible that the incline was added in the light of experience in the latter half of the loco's life? Is that a relatively simple "mod" that culd have been carried out at Dinas? And could that explain the shortening of the chimney mentioned in the caption? Does that pipe leading into the front of the boiler look to have been extended since the earlier pictures too?

Cheers,

Andrew.

This has been discussed at length somewhere - WHH, possibly?

Couldn't find the lengthy discussion you mentioned, but a quick Google pulled up this from Dr Ben's site:

the handsome Hunslet 0-6-4ST Beddgelert, was rebuilt by its makers in 1894 with the boiler sloping slightly upwards towards the front (i.e. in the opposite direction to a "kneeling cow" rack railway loco). This would have allowed the loco to run cab-first uphill, with wagons trailing behind the smokebox end, where the overhang was less and thus so was the risk of derailment; unlike the much less powerful Snowdon Ranger or Moel Tryfan, Beddgelert was not built to the Single Fairlie design. The inclined boiler allowed the water level to be maintained on the gradient

So it did happen, it happened in Leeds rather than Dinas, and I need never worry about it ever againm, hurrah, thanks MdeC! I guess that little quote addresses the issue of the overhang too - presumably going downhill the loaded slate waggons were largely trundling along by themselves rather than being pulled by Beddgelert, so she couldn't pull 'em off the rails...

Cheers all,

Andrew.

Yes/No/Yes. For some reason Beddgelert hits the spot for me, with any luck I'll be able to afford one before they go out of production as I reckon she'd look good in maroon with IMR lining! ;)

Has anyone actually had a RH one in their hands yet? Just curious to know how it works. Not that I´d think about buying one. Honest
