What to sell, what to keep?

Post by edd » Sat Jun 21, 2014 5:17 pm

Hello All
I'm a long time member of the 16mm organisation and have been on and off with my garden railway for many years. However I'm looking to drastically reduce my number of projects because I also have a classic car demanding attention and nothing is ever getting finished.

In the next few days some engines will be going on ebay. What would people recommend keeping to keep a nice but small train set.

A PPS Janet, working with radio control.

A roundhouse pooter, never used but presumed working.

A mamod, wretched thing that barely works, modified with radio control.

A Slaters Plastikard electric rough pup hunslet, was working until I broke it.

A scratch built, not by me, electric saddletank, also not working.

I really need to raise some funds and create space but I just don't know what to get rid off. Out of those 5 what would you keep and what would you put on ebay? I know the pooter is the "best" engine there but its a little too large for my rolling stock and also apparently people are paying silly money for them on ebay recently, £1500 for one a few weeks ago!

All opinions are welcome
Thanks
Edd

Hi

I would suggest that you donate them to a worthy cause! :)

On an unrelated note W&TVR is currently excepting donations ;) :D :D

I'd keep the Janet, because its working, and the Blue saddle tank, and then get it working.... and sell the others. You say you need to raise some money so the pooter will do that along with the Hunslet which although not working anything hunslet usually gets a fair price. The mamod you can sell as its likely to go to a good home where it will be breathed on and made to run well if its a sensible price....

Having said all that if you want to sell the blue one i'd be interested to know what price you want for it.

Good luck with the sale !
Regards
Barry

I would keep the Hunslet and sell all the others as they are only of freelance design so of limited interest.
Then I would restore the Hunslet and maybe get it lined and why not make a nice little display with some slate wagons and mount it on a bit of ballasted track in a Perspex case.

I agree the hunslet is a nice little engine that would make a nice display after a little tlc

That would be my keeper.

Whats the classic car by the way?

hi, thanks for the opinions, keep them coming.

I've never really gone in for static displays. Also I managed to loose lots of parts for the hunslet during a housemove so I'm ringing slaters on Monday to hopefully place an order for a new back axle.

For a bit of background I'm 22 and just finished uni so I need to clear out some unfinished projects before I move out.

Its a 68 triumph spitfire. I started it when I was about 15 and right before it was finished I bought a BSA bantam to do up. Ended up with the trains and the car never really getting finished and now I'm moving out they have to be thinned out and completed.

Cheers
Edd

SELL

The Mamod. It should find a good home for someone to fix up and make right with some tweaking and maybe a couple new parts here and there. Depending on its stats, but having RC in its favour, would fetch a decent price on EBAY.

Both Hunslet Kits - see if you coukld repair them a little and sell them on the Bay?

KEEP

The Pooter. Best engine by far, BUT if you're really after the cash, and it doesn't fit in with your loading gauge as you mentioned, it's too big, then SELL. It will fetch a bang tiday sum.

KEEP

The Janet. KEEP IT. It's small enough, smaller than your Pooter as you said, the Pooter was too big for your wants. It's also the refined, better engineered version of a Mamod so there shouldn't be any problems, especially as PPS's goodwill has now transferred to Roy Wood Models [roywoodmodels.co.uk] It's the perfect candidate for a Keeper.

If you want money sell the Pooter as old Roundhouse locos now seem to be selling for silly money, plus some pooters have a reputation for not running to the usual Roundhouse standards but as there were several redesigns it is hard to say if yours is a good one unless you run it.

Taking into account your home and hobby circumstances I would sell them all with the working locos separately from the non working ones. Then when you get where you are going you can buy something suitable for your needs and new circumstances.
If you are struggling with unfinished projects at your age you will still have that problem but much worse in years to come.

Good luck

Oooo I know this one.
Too many projects and not enough hours in the day.
Mind you, having the attention span of a gnat doesn't help!

I would go with what others say, keeping the Janet. It will be worth giving the Pooter a steam test though, to see whether it works.

Hello All
Thanks for the replies. Well yesterday I created a garden railway in 25minutes. Just a line of track tacked down along the wood railway sleepers on the back of our garden. This is because my last attempt years ago took over 5 years and never saw a train going round it.

Coming back to keeping and selling I have the parts for the hunslet on their way from slaters to fix it with a view to selling. The mamod is hitting ebay tonight. The Pooter I am undecided over and the PPS Janet stays.

Image

The pooter ran very nicely for considering its been years and years in storage. I'm used to tiny little Mamods so when the safety valve blew whilst I was stood over it I jumped very hard. A tiny bit lumpy in reverse but otherwise a very nice run. The Janet on the hand just sat there and blew water at me for 20 minutes so I don't know whats going on there.

Thanks again for your help
Edd

Any of them on ebay yet?

Mamod is on ebay, listing starts at 8pm tonight. The black hunslet has spares on their way to get it ready for sale. The blue one has a few people interested and the Pooter is just sat there. I start work in a new city in a few weeks so I have to get them moving.

Definatly an interesting collection their! If you like the pooter I'd say keep it as another would probally be difficult to get hold of again in the future, I keep looking for them and fail  It should make a good sum though if you need the money though. Keeping the PPS Janet is a good way forward though, simple and small.
Thanks
Jack

I saw a pooter running at the weekend and would like to add one to my collection, nice solid looking loco.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the opinions, and now a month later I can say that the deed is done. I was just amazed at were they all ended up.
Roundhouse pooter - via ebay- went to Scotland
Mamod - Cornwall
Binnie Tipper wagons - Italy
Blue Saddletank - A nice chap on this forum
Rough Pup - Via ebay - not yet delivered

That leaves me with just the Janet and 3 IP wagons. Enough to "keep my hand in" the hobby but not requiring huge amounts of work or time.
Thanks again
Edd
