Salem/Roundhouse Garratt "Helen"

Hi everyone!
As many of you are now aware, my father loves his Garratts. He's finally finished his latest creation.
With full Roundhouse running gear powered by a custom Cheddar boiler, it has plenty of power and should prove to be a good comparison to our Darj "D" when it arrives next year.

The original model was built from a kit supplied by Salem models, and (as many of you could already guess) never ran properly: leaky boiler, worn cylinders and general poor quality parts made the locomotive un-runnable.
Dad eventually gave the model back to Salem and replaced it with a Locobox Darj, also named Helen. Dad sold this some time ago, but we have seen this locomotive on Rhos Helyg's page so we're glad it's still going!

Dad eventually got around to making a replacement "Salem" with Roundhouse components. He wanted the locomotive to look the same as the old engine.

By the way, the Cambrian Express headboard was fitted due to our holidays camping in Wales. We would see the Cambrian passing by our campsite outside of Barmouth.

I don't think it is the same loco. The Garratt called "HELEN" on my site is a Locobox one...

The only Salem one that has been here was this one...

Hi Tony,
That is the Darj that replaced the Salem. It was also named Helen and kept the nameplates when it was sold.

The Salam and Locobox engines did not have valve gear, they have slip eccentrics, and mamod like cylinders.

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. It lives in Kent now.

The Locobox ones I have seen have a reversing steam valve under the boiler...
