regner locos

Post by Big Jim » Wed Oct 22, 2014 4:42 pm

I have been offered a regner lumber jack second hand. What are peoples opinion of these little German besties? And what should I be paying for one? Failing that I also know of a chaloner needing a good home.

They are great for no-nonsense running. They raise steam in minutes and happily plod along - no need for R/C as they are geared.

I have a Chaloner which is perfect for 7/8ths and if you buy Mr Gremlin's condenser drain it will empty the condensing tank automatically.

He is on here so contact him directly, username 'Gremlin' :)

Here is my one:

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/h8-XEQSdtYc?hl=en_US& ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/h8-XEQSdtYc?hl=en_US&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Alternatively, look up Regners on YouTube as Chris Bird has quite a few to watch on there which are better quality than my filming efforts!

Ahh, so they are 7/8th scale rather than nominal 16mm?

And they´re fun for messing about with, substracting from, adding to .... whatever.

some lovely plodding along there Tom, sounds great too.

I like the Vincent Tender, almost thinking of parting with my Vincent but not so sure now.

Ooooooooh...never seen a Regner Lumberjack before, I quite like it!

A Chaloner would tempt me too much into 7/8ths...which I fear greatly!

I've watched that Chaloner video four times now...I am not impressed.

Fortunately there are no Chaloner's going second hand at the moment, or I might just end up jumping from 00 to 7/8ths and skipping 16mm altogether!

Here's my very slightly modified Vincent.

To see what can be done to them check out Chris Bird's 7/8ths conversion here,

I got a Lumber Jack kit assembled 2nd hand, and like many other Regner owners I initially had problems with the burner. These were solved by flushing out the gas tank with acetone, fitting coffee filter paper behind the jet, and sealing the jet holder into the boiler flue with PTFE Tape.

Regner use their own unique brand of gas filler valve which takes a bit of getting used to. My kit came with a replacement Chuffed2Bits ronson type filler valve which I fitted instead and it works well but does mean the gas tank can now hold more gas with the likelihood of liquid gas initially at the burner.

The gas will outlast the boiler water so fitting a water filler valve is recommended. Just note that the Regner valve only works with 4mm tubing so you may need a new pump bottle (the Jackson's Miniatures 'Superior' one works OK).

Some recent video of my Lumber Jack in action here - http://gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/about9116.html

I'd recommend that.  Many in 16 mm would like to but are too heavily invested in 16 mm.  I say "its never too late to do the right thing"...

Best wishes,
Dave.

Oh don't. The only thing stopping me is my anxiety that 7/8ths is just slightly too big

Thanks for the advice folks :D
I do like the lumberjack, the chaloner I think will be over scale.
I think it could be suitably anglicised and made suitable for the PMR, all six yards of it!

The thought had crossed my mind after counting the fleet but I'm sure as soon as I open the box and have a run that will go away. I think it works just as well in either scale.

I've a few Regners and have usually found them to be totally reliable, extremely well engineered and great fun to use.

The only issue I've had with them is they can be a bit difficult to light and for the flame to pop back. I've read about problems with the Lumber Jack where constant burning in the smoke box has caused the springs of the oscillating steam motor to fail. (The steam motor is under the smoke box and there's an opening between the two).

To get around this I fitted the smoke box door with hinges so I now open the door, light the loco correctly and then close the door again. I pinched the idea from here:
