I want to start a 16mm railway in ma garden, but I have next to no money. Does anyone know where I can get second hand, or cheap 32mm track from?

Type in 'Peco SM32 in eBay' and you will see there is quite a bit going second hand at the moment.

Look for the red plastic stuff. Its horrible but its how I started. Pin it to a base and paint it black or brown if it offends but we've had a lot of fun with it around the house and on the patio... Doing something is better than nothing. Trust me I know this as all my stuff has been packed away for months waiting for a house move to happen...

You can get Big Big Train track, which is 0 gauge and cheap, but is moulded out of red plastic.

Triang BigBig track. You can sometimes find it, or a version of it, in black. I picked up a big box of it at a toy fair years ago and it has provided much fun winding round and under furniture. No good for steam I don't expect but battery electrics are fine. Heres the sort of thing....

hasnt burnt yet with my meths burner..I got a huge oval on my patio as my test track and its just at the moment sitting on the slabs and has survived a run over with a childs pedal tractor and being stood on with a 3year old and 1 year old...
black version is faller track
red is big big track

The black plastic track was also made by Timpo for there train sets. Very similar to Big Big but looks better!

You might want to try one of these. Made of good quality thick card,they're easy to build and look good. When varnished they will stand up to weather OK. The chassis can be a Tri-ang or Novo Big Big Ruston or steam outline battery loco. They turn up on e-bay quite often.

You have to read carefully as they made both 32 and 45mm. Look for anything that's o gauge.

You say your on a budget but it might be worth us asking what your actually after. The plastic track might not be what you need... I'd suggest looking for mamod track, a bit more expensive but you can run anything on it.

be careful of 0 gauge track as its hasnt got as deepness as sm32 track and you will find anything with a big flange on the wheels will hit the sleepers..

Good point jay. Mamod track works fine though.

Stay with Peco if you are going down the plastic route.

It will work and last and you will not get issues later on when you run different items of stock yours or other people's.

You have to invest a bit in this or any hobby to make it pleasurable.
