Bandit will go to live steam!

Hello there!
I changed my mind since I wrote this other topic:
http://gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/Live ... t7911.html
I'm now looking for a JANET from Roy Wood Models (Thanks Pauly):
http://roywoodmodels.co.uk/janet
It seems to be a great loco, not very expensive and Christmas is coming...
I watched the video of this loco and I really like it.
Roy Wood Models looks like a small company but I'm not in a hurry to buy my new toy.
So could you give me your advices before buying this steam loco?
I want to run it on 45mm track but it's not very important I guess.
Thank you all!

It is if you buy a 32mm gauge version.......................
Seriously though, that's a nice little loco - a Mamod type with all the problems ans issues sorted out.

Congratulations. I love those Roy Wood engines, which I have yet to see in real life but you can get excited about them watching Chris Bird's videos. Wasn't terribly keen on Mamod-type engines until I saw those. Now I want one.

The rwm Janet is brilliant. I have some parts from Janet and they are of the highest quality.

As I was trying to correct a fellow Garden Railway enthusiast who was looking at an IP Jane yesterday these should not be called '
Mamod's' as there is nothing mechanical on them that was ever made by Mamod and thus they should not be getting 'tarred' with the same bad reputation brush that the Mamod SL & MSS locomotives are.
The IP Jane was developed out of the shortcomings of the Mamod SL6. When it was no longer available PPS introduced the Jenny but it did not sell well (maybe because it was not the open cab quarry type loco like the IP Jane, but rather the side tank cabbed loco like the Mamod SL). PPS then introduced the Janet, which was a further improvement including fitting weights within the side tanks to improve traction.
Roy Wood has continued the 'J' family line-up with more improvements to a proven design as the RWM Janet.

Chris it is great to see you have raised the bar on your budget and you will not be disappointed with an RWM Janet as your first live steam locomotive. Saves all the hassle & frustration associated with developing a Mamodification project from the attractive low initial cost of a Mamod SL or MSS.
Well Done on your decision.

................ which is why I deliberately said Mamod
TYPE..............

We just say "Mamod gene pool" as it's the same smokebox castings, body type construction [but even then, I see a Janet has thicker material for the bodywork] and system of reverser block and oscillating cylinders.
But of course, to much higher engineering standards, which places them in a different category already. Afterall, one wouldn't call a KITTEN a 'mamod' would they

Thank you all for your advices.
It's so great to have some folks who can help you.
I use 600mm radius curves (Piko G track). Maybe it's too tight for this kind of loco...

I'm pretty sure that with their 61mm wheelbase, a Janet should dofine. Check your PMs.

Exactly Chris, and was the intent of my original discussion.
If others have interpreted my discussion otherwise then I can only apologise for the failing of our "common" language - a written piece viewed by
X people in English can be mis-interpreted up to another
X-1 different ways!
It was not my intent to start another heated "oscillating" discussion - the original one lead to our discussions being segregated into the only sub-Forum on here, and sadly the last one yesterday has led to the first locked Topic in that sub-Forum.
Here is a question which is intended as a bit of fun - Why are some oscillating De Winton's not grouped in this same family, be it Mamod type/gene, 'J' or otherwise? After all the prototype PPS De Winton (which I have in my collection) was built using standard Mamod/MSS drag beams plus the following Mamod/MSS upgraded parts - chassis frames, chassis spacer, holed disk steel wheels, oscillating 'O' ring cylinders & reverser/regulator valve, and the improved RWM De Winton also uses the following Mamod/MSS upgraded parts - spoked steel wheels, oscillating 'O' ring cylinders & reverser/regulating valve.
Anyway thanks for listening & I trust you appreciate my original discussion was meant to be sincere.
Chris (
Bandit), I hope you are successful with your aim of getting an RWM Janet. A first hand experience posting from a newcomer to live steam would enhance the Mamod sub-Forum as our experience of this version of the Janet is currently limited to posted video links.

I have a Bachmann Porter 0-4-0 with a 70mm wheelbase. It runs fine. So with a 61mm wheelbase, no problem.
PM checked. My answer will be on its way ASAP.

How many pairs of shoes does she have? I counted my wife's shoes and decided I did not require her permission to buy my locomotive.

Good morning all and in particular Chris from France
I'm sorry you haven't heard back from me. I have tried to email you with the answer to your last email but all the emails I sent have been bounced back to me - and I have tried at least 12 times using all my computers and different email addresses. I have no idea why this should be happening.
Thanks, by the way, to all of you for the kind comments about my locos - much appreciated.
Kind regards
Roy Wood
