A question about Mechanical Lubricators...

Hi everyone,
I've been looking at the Locoworks Mechanical Lubricator and I think it would look good on my modified "Katie", but all the pics I have seen show the model lubricator on the L-H side, but because (on our layout), we run clockwise and because the layout hugs the fence, the L-H side is hardly ever seen.
Basically my question is: On a real life Lubricator, would the pipe runs have to face the cylinders (forwards), or can they face backwoods?
