Not too expensive childrens locomotive

My little son will be 6 years old by the weekend and he suddenly changed his mind about an earlier birthday wish, so now he would like his own locomotive to run on my 32mm garden layout.
We already have a couple of the old Triang Rusten-type battery locomotives but i would like to get him something a bit more detailed , yet strong enough to be handled by a 6 year old.
Any battery driven locomotive that fits this description will be fine and RC will be a plus.
Does anyone have any suggestions what models are out there that fit into this category that do not cost an arm or a leg?

Get yourself an IP Engineering Rapier kit - then he can decide what colour he wants it, and if he "helps to build it" he'll look after it a lot more!

Thanks for the suggestion Brian, i would like a model that has a bit more bells and whistles. The Rapier kit is good but a bit plain.

What type of features do you/he want? It all depends how much you want to spend

Just anything in metal or plastic that runs on batteries and has the general outline of a steam loco.
As regards the price range, lets say £0- £150

my mate Keith has a little diesel that fulfills all criteria you require, indeed his 6 year old plays with it no problem!
Its an 0-4-0 called "Danny", trouble is I can't remember who makes it!

thats the one, I knew someone would know. Its a very robust all metal loco, it survives kids and looks nice doing so!

The LC Models "Danny" would be a great diesel (for all the above mentioned reasons) - and, with outside frames, cranks & rods will give the visual interest that the younger element seem to enjoy
If it's steam outline you're after, a GRS kit could be constructed over a suitable chassis and you could simply leave off the "delicate" fine detail which would be in danger of getting broken off
(Store the unused bits until they're older and simply "upgrade" the loco!)
