i think i shall start to do an overhaul on my mss soon. i now have a pair of wheels, thanks to silly billy for kindly donating them.
i shall re do the black paint, make is cabless, make it chuff, fit new reg handle, and possibly convert it to meths, because i dont like the verticle gas tank very much, it spoils the look of the loco, but if i could get a horizontal tank on, then it would look ok., cylinder covers, steps, and other general accessories. if i had £100 space, i would buy the upgrade boiler.

the upgrade boiler is great mate
check out marvin it runs wonderful now.
keep us posted with pictures of the rebuild
also I would love a gas conversion but cant afford the £50 to buy one

That reminds me... I've been takling my mate Sam's MSS today - fitted new wheels + cosmetic stuff. All I have done is take the chassis off to fit the wheels, reassembled it and tested on air. There seems to be a leak from the reverser when you put it into forwards, reverse seems ok. When steam testing on blocks, I cudnt build enough pressure though to make it run reverse. I took the reverser block off, cleaned the port faces, cleaned the face where the front bit goes on, oiled up with steam oil etc, all nice n tight, still no avail. Any ideas guys?

seen that already mate, I cleaned it out when I disassembled it (even though not contaminated)... hmmm....

It may hav to be a new reverser if I cant fix her...

i have jsut put it back together so it will steam, the sight glass leaks alot even tho i just put another boiler on.
i think i might buy the upgrade boiler. are they alot better, steam better?

I wouldn't buy a boiler, just fix the sight glass. do the wheels work ok?

yes, thanks very much.
it wouldnt realy move, as most of whats was in the boiler leaked out the sight glass.
i have decided to get the djb whistle.

andysleigh I covered leaking sight glass plastics in my PM to you. If you get those oval washers I recommended you will not have any problems - I've fitted 3 so far with no problems leaking.
mhlr you need to be very careful when fitting the reverser/regulator valve to ensure that the steam/exhaust holes line up with the ones in the chassis frames. Unfortunately these are impossible to see with the cylinder back plates fitted, so remove a cylinder, and have a look at what your valve body is doing. I would also recommend fitting an oil resistant paper gasket between the valve body & the chassis frames on both sides, as the leaking steam tends to remove the paint and induce some corrosion, leading to pitting, in that area.

Surely the reverser will line up though due to the bolts that go in? Never thought of the oil resist. paper gasket though, thats a good idea. Any ideas where to get some? SteamyJim also had the idea of the bolt that goes into the back of the selector, because that was leaking. It could be that the bolt is worn at the bit where it goes from thread to blank. So I may rethread that...
