PPS De Winton

This is a long story, but a long time ago my brother in law before I knew him built a 0 gague De-Winton, fairly scale looking and small with a single oscillator. Well some toerag stole it.

I saw this on e-bay, the wife said it looked like her brothers stolen one, so I rang him up and it wasnt, but he liked it, as did I.

So guess what, we bought it 50-50. Turns out its a PPS De Winton Job.

It looked a little tatty, and to be honest it is, but I like it that way.

It arrived full of gas and half full of water!. So I oiled it up and lit it.

It has a little sizzle out of the joint for the steam pipe, and a little sizzle on the gague frame top nut, but got to 40lbs no problem and nearly had my fingers off when I spun it over. It seemed to go ok.

Anyone know much about these things, got any instructions that sort of thing. Or any advice?

Ive got no track so I expect first run on rails will be at the Tom Rolt Vintage rally in Tywyn, mid wales last bankholiday weekend in may. Hopefully brother in law will bring some slate trucks.

Oh, here she is.....Laura the DeWinton

Ooooooh, I saw that just a few days ago. Would have bid if I had the money :( Looks great! I don't know much about them to be honest, as I've not come across too many PPS DeWintons ;)

Nice. As I'm sure you know it's built from Mamod/Mamod Upgrade parts, so it should be Jane's equal.

Hi Hedd, and Welcome to the Forum.

I'm glad that your win over my bidding was a successful one.

As William has stated it uses many of the components from PPS used on the PPS Janet or Mamod upgrades. As such those pistons should run on a smaller pressure of 20PSI quite happily. I see that your sight glass has some staining which looks like oil has been sucked back into the boiler. This is caused by the vacuum that is formed when boiler cools down, and sucks the oil/condensate from the lubricator back into the boiler. To avoid this make sure that the steam valve at the side of the lubricator is fully closed at the end of a run. That steam valve is also fitted with what looks like a metal servo horn, which may have been an attempt to radio control this loco.

The steam nut on the top of the boiler should have an 'O' ring fitted inside, which is probably what needs replacing to stop that leaking. The bolt on the top of the water sight glass tube probably needs a new washer fitted to stop the leak, or try soaking it in a little oil (Cheddar Models actually assembled these using high temp thread lock on the threads as well).

Look forward to seeing it in action soon.
