Ffion kit

Post by williamfj » Thu Mar 03, 2011 6:09 pm

I might as well start the thread now, I had planned to start is once it was finished.
For the past 2 days I've been working on the new AnDel kit Ffion and it went together well, however the switch circuit board shorted out thanks to a broken wire but it looks repairable, once I go home next week I'll know for sure.
The chassis is well made and the overall impression I've got is that it'll be a powerful little (even though it dwarfs River Ankh!) loco and the manual control makes it more fun for me.
I had nearly got it painted, when I was removing some masking tape it also took off great amounts of paint with it, so the cab front, sides and back have been stripped and repainted using a proper undercoat (note to self, top layer paint sure ain't undercoat! ) I'm going to leave the bonnet for now and see what the cab looks like after it's painted, if it's come out well I'll strip and repaint the bonnet.
The loco will be named Offler, after the Discworld's crocodile (headed) god. I'm off to cook some sausages, to appease Offler, the god not the loco!

Offler on test, she was sat on the buffers for that

Looks like you're the first one on here (with the Ffion - not the Discworld names ;) )
It's certainly a large chunk of loco for your money and I'm itching to get one and scratchbuild a full cab version! :D

Well I've cooked the sausages, Offler ate the essence and I merely consumed the earthly remnants of the sausages. After the ceremony I checked my inbox there was one from AnDel stating that a replacement switch board has been sent off, Offler works fast these days! :D
Once the replacement switch board is fitted all that needs doing is a trip home to drill holes in the buffers and running plate to allow the coupling pins and holdin screws in place. Painting will continue between disasters!

You will have to come down to the MDLR once it's relayed - Offler can meet Sir Samuel, Lady Sybil, Hevelock Vetinari and all the witches!

I think Offler would have to be renamed for it to fit in with your lovely locos, a small 'unconventionally' good looking loco hhmmmmm, Nobby Nobbs would do it!

That was too well spotted - you should have been looking at the loco!

You're either an MI5 agent or a professional identity thief!

Ah but you don't have the full post code! ;) Back onto Offler, he has apparently joined the assassins guild as he is now in black undercoat, or is in FR improved testing black, take your pick!

That's how you confuse the W&LLR P.Way gang, show 'em a row of shovels and tell 'em to take their pick!

I reckon the Ffion would look very businesslike in weathered black! :D

Looking good indeed, I have got my eye on one of these. Any chance you cold pose it alongside your IP rapier so I can get an idea of it's size.. Of course any feedback on power would be handy as well.

There we are, Offler in assassins guild livery/FR improved testing black next to River Ankh. I'm going to leave Offler in black as I think it looks quite good, miles better than in wispy matt green! :D

He is quite a bit bigger than River Ankh as you can tell and it does look a bit odd with the wagons, but if the AnDel open wagon is immediately behind it doesn't look too odd.

Cheers for that, I could not tell from Andels pic what size the loco was. Now I can & it does seem an ideal size & will fit in fine for me.

Looks superb in black, if I wasn't limiting the amount of diesels on my line I'd probably go and buy one :)

A week after the kit arrived, Offler is finished! It would have been finished quicker if I didn't burn out the switch panel (thanks are due to Andel for sending a new one out for free!) and have to completely strip off 3 layers of paint and re-do it. Offler doesn't look too bad but close up the paint finish leaves something to be desired, that said the exhaust & radiator look quite good. I've sent off for the forms to join the York Society of Model Engineers so hopefully in a week or so I'll hopefully have an update on how Offler and River Ankh are on track. The front bufferbeam still needs some attention as you can tell!

It looks similar but without the extended axles, cranks & con rods and with different wheels.
