Number 7

Post by Endless, Nameless » Wed Jun 16, 2010 10:34 pm

Or will be, when I get some numbers made up...

My Edrig is now on the road to completion, although there is still a long way to go- plenty of detailing to add. There should be a toolbox hiding the gas filler, but it's AWOL. Planning on adding lamp irons, handrails around the smokebox, a westinghouse pump on the tank fronts, lettering and numbering, weathering etc etc...

Photos all taken by Tag, running today on the Longlands & Western.

The green wagons are also mine (in desperate need of a coat of paint), regauged Bachmann G scale mineral wagons that I paid £5 each for. 32mm Accucraft wheelsets (L&B wagons) with fuel hose spacers, and the knuckle couplers swapped for centre buffers.

Looking good (& what a line that looks!). Still so want to do that to my Edrig.

The wasp stripes give a genuine industrial steam look as well as the paint scheme. Very nice.

I agree, love the industrial look that you don't often get.

That edrig has a really good industrial feel to it! :D all you need now is a quarry line or something in an industrial area and it would suit it perfectly! :D

Looks grand! Needs weathering into a shockingly dirty state now!

Cheers for all the comments folks. I will be getting it weathered- the trouble with letting it get dirty naturally is that most of the muck is oil (and with the chuffer, there isn't much of that) which actually makes it shinier- and any other muck tends to be a bit overscale.

Tag's line is indeed very lovely indeed, it's an honour to be able to run there. It's actually the only line the engine has ever ran on.

Hoping to do plenty of visiting over the summer, I need to contact the Glos. area 16mm group when I'm back home. I won't be living anywhere permanently for a while yet, so no railway of my own...

Plenty of work still to do on the loco, lots of little bits. I'll keep this thread updated as I do, seeing as I've changed tack completely from my previous thread.

I like the wasp stripes (well, you know what I mean!) on the bufferbeams, very industrial!

That's a very unusual colour, but the loco's coming on well. Tag's line looks splendid - MUST get down to Saltash, but it's a bit far for a day trip!

Err – †rees. They are miniature conifers with restricted root systems and trimmed over the years to look more like full size trees...

Ahh, how have you restricted the roots? A pot or by bonzai style trimming them?

First off, "Hi Tag, great to see you on here!"

Second, Mr B. I've found that it's not really neccesary to restrict the roots "Bonsai style" as some people do, just regular pruning to shape does the trick. (A pleasant enough activity while a battery loco hauls a rain round the line and you spend time "planning" improvements/additions to the landscaping :D )

Last but not least, great shots of the Edrig project Matt, that seems to be coming along nicely, looking forward to the rest of the planned upgrades :D

Also nice to see another part of the L&W in the photo's. I only have a small line and have been very much inspired by Longlands - I've often wondered what the rest of the line looks like away from the oft featured station area :?:

There is a short bank up to Trehan Station where there is a level crossing over a road up to what is now a derelict village. This is slated for restoration as time affords. There is also a roadside garage with old-fashioned petrol pumps and a path with steps up to the village. There is a tunnel under the path and most of the rest of the line is in slate lined cutting. The skew footbridge is currently removed for restoration and the replacement signalling is in hand.

This is a small garden – and the LWR takes up all of it. The footbridge leads over to a church and there is an old Cornish engine house on the high ground. most of the site is wooded, and steam trains are generally run by sound, and a vague indication with smoke/steam rising through the trees.

The trees are pruned annually. many of them were doctored around 25 yrs ago by cutting off the tops a couple of inches from the ground and fixing a cutting into a slash on the top of the trunk. This provides for a very wide and knarled trunk and, as the trees grow, one cuts off everything that doesn't look like a tree. The trick here is cut from the bottom up. Trees are not bushy. Bushes are bushy – and to form a tree the branches should be pruned ruthlessly to provide perhaps three main branches. The branches should then be pruned so that the greenery is mostly at the end of the branches. The roots of mine are restricted by granite – though by now I suspect they have found their way through.

When the rest of the line is back up to speed scenically I will do a piece on small railways....
