Bachmann Lyn Question

Can any American fan tell me what those two lumps are on the front running plate, under the smokebox please ? I have worked with both steam and diesel locos all my life and I have never seen these before. They don't look like spring covers or rerailing jacks, and aren't on the SR Lyn version......Any ideas

Thanks.
Andy

I split this into its own topic as the previous thread was from 2008, and I don't think anybody on there has been around recently. (https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=243 in case it's helpful for reference.)

Are you talking about the wedge-shaped things on the Bachmann Big Hauler version of the Lyn? As an American railfan, they look kind of like rerailers/rerailing ramps to me.

Hi, yes, thanks they are the items I am on about. I assumed re-railers but they just don't look right for anything. I have tried searching for pics of similar American locos, but come up blank every time. I have pulled them off, but unfortunately they were glued on as well and slightly marked the running plate, so I put them back on. But hate the look.......Never mind

They kind of look like Burlington style rerailers, but I'm not 100% sure that's what they're supposed to be.

I've had a hard time finding reference photos with anything similar mounted on a locomotive pilot. They must have based it on something...

Well done. I think you have nailed it there. They certainly look very similar. Thanks very much, and no, I am NOT painting mine yellow !

I think black or rust would've been more likely depending on the period. I was visiting the Colorado Railroad Museum yesterday and spotted this on one of their cog railway locos:
