I think it's to do with them being slotted rather than holey, you can wrap mesh around them to quieten them down, I've done it on mine, but I'm not totally convinced. Milton Loco Works (
www.sm32.co.uk ) will change it for you but it's expensive, not sure how complex it would be to do it yourself?

The Milton Loco Works burner is very quiet in comparison to the original. I have one on my "Ida" loco, and a friend fitted one to his "Excelsior", what a difference. I can thoroughly recommend them.

This is my first post here, and I'm a real novice at live steam. I have Ruby with a burner that roared like a jet engine. I made a sleeve for the burner out of brass tube, narrower at the far end and gradually widening toward the backhead end. I cut some stainless mesh and then placed it under the brass sleeve.
The burner is now very quiet and much more adjustable--uses less gas too

They're usually noisy because they're turned up too much. You should be able to just hear them.......Allan.

I find that if you do this, then steam production just does not meet consumption, and once you get below 20psi on the clock you are in deep trouble with no way back

Likewise I would love to see a pic of the brass, and stainless steel sleve

i found a different solution, if you put the strip that hold peco fish plates, bent into a U shape, in the flue it makesa the heat hang around longer so you can turn the buner down

Check out this thread on another forum for photographs. I haven't done this myself, but people seem to get good results so I will probably give it a go...
