A high proportion of the early Irish 3' gauge locos were saddle tanks - the 3 Ballycastle locos, the Bruiser on the B&L and the Cushendall tanks were all STs. Once you get past 1883 then the ST configuration tends to disappear.
The more pressing reason is that my wife likes saddle tanks.
