Actually, if anybody else has something small and battery electric, bring it along. I regret to say it's not been possible to make the line Bluebottle compliant, but he's welcome to come and pose on a siding!

As someone that lives in the US and is a member of the 16mm Association, trust me, the membership/subscription cost is more than worth the money.
You get more out of one issue of SMT than an entire year of some other garden railway publication here in the states.
There is a Canadian group, and a newsletter group in the US.
What is interesting is the huge jump of North American members in the past year. Easy to tell by numbers, as I was the VERY last new member in the 2012 roster.

In what format is the online version delivered? Is it downloadable? I don't have any IOS or Android devices, just a normal laptop.

I've been subscribing to the online version for a while. It's cheaper than the paper version and doesn't take months to get here (if it gets here at all).
The electronic version of the magazine is designed to be read online, not downloaded. The browser displays the pages as screen images.
The tablet app. has some way to read the magazine offline, but I've not used it, so don't know the details.
As Tag said, there is a free trial of the May 2010 issue available on the website. This is a direct link to the Garden Rail page

+1 for the garden rail mag, i subscribe to the electronic version too and it is always a pleasure to read on the ipad.
