Compton Down Merges with Llechfan

Anything related to the garden railway world that is not catered for in another board

On my first visit to a garden meeting I managed to break the host's new lifting bridge, because I didn't understand how it worked and tried to lift it the wrong way  Fortunately it was repaired in about five minutes, but it was still quite embarassing!

at least you never completely destroyed a brand new signal box that had only just been finished

I never done anything like as bad as some of these stories, but I did drive a loco through the back of an engine shed. Technically though it wasn't my fault as when the loco went in the radio lost signal and the regulator didn't close!

Sounds good, will get the details on the LlGR web site as soon as I receive them... Just spotted the 2010 open day info on the Association web site, so I can copy the dates from there I guess.

Hello Richard in Sunny Solihull - was staying up there for Stoneleigh weekend! it was very sunny. Great to hear from you here - will be fantastic to see news on Llechfan site - 'tis a thing of beauty that one ;) Think Steve & the gang hoping to come up with some info to sling in your direction soon, looking forward to getting some weekends in meself :D ..... and haven't caused any major crashes there yet - have run in both directions - but did manage to tip over borrowed rake of coaches in spectacular fashion - and had various chilled engines rescued from dotted points about the line

Excellent, look forward to it.

Sunny in Solihull again today, spent some time contemplating the rhubarb patch with a view to (1) figuring out how to get the line to negotiate it safely, and (2) assessing future requirements for bolster wagons.

Nice one, a proper whoops moment. But to quote BR rule no 1985, you are not a proper railwayman until you derail/crash something.

The first time a garden railer friend (who is not a member of this forum) ran his Jane on an indoor layout in Cornwall, it went straight into one of Tag Gorton's super detailed loco's & knocked it completely off the line. Apparently Tag didnt 'say anything!

I had three derailments while I was at the FR. In all three cases:
- I was driving the loco.
- I was under instruction from somebody in authority (2 x Duty Supervisor, 1 x Controller).
- The movement was in a siding with a known rolling stock restriction.
- I asked "There is such-and-such a restriction here, are you sure this will be OK?" before commencing the movement.
- I was told "It'll be fine".
- It wasn't.

That sounds like a very familiar situation to several situations i have heard about and been in both on the FR and WHR!

I put a class 08 shunt loco down two different sidings at Oxley at the same time in 1990. Thing went 90 degrees to the left.

Then I did this on the Ironbridge branch, although technically it wasn't my fault as the road spread...

Still claimed it as my derailment... :D

heard a lovely turn of phrase from friend at Llechfan for such occasions.... 'ahhh, they're having a little lie down'

The main advantage to model railways - soooo much easier with 'hand of God' to correct such moments of madness ;)

Will remember that one for next time.. :D :D

Agreed, it's so much easier to sort it out with 16mm or G gauge.. ;)

I've nearly caused a derailment at Ravenglass, luckily upon rearing over the wooden chock i'd accidentaly left in place the wheels dropped back on the rails. This was in the depths of the carriage shed and nobody ever found out about it...

So did that blast furnace actually work?

kes

Post by kes » Tue Jul 13, 2010 1:34 pm

furnace contained power supply for smoke machine and had various bulkhead lights with orange bulbs tucked about the place - and have the odd photo tucked away somewhere with some BIG flames eminating from the 'mixture' that Dad had concocted for such occasions.

The S4C footage which hovers about on a couple of internet tele channels shows the steelworks next door in full flight, gives idea of what furnace could do..
