HA ha! Brilliant, just the sort of thing that would happen on a narrow gauge railway!

I actually left mine unpainted for a VERY long time, as I liked 'em "in the raw" so to speak.

That's exactly what happened on the prototype. Changes to animal welfare laws in the '30s meant that livestock in transit had to be stopped for rest, feed, water and inspection much more frequently than before. This added to both journey time and cost- it didn't affect road transport so badly since the 11th commandment (though shalt not get caught) worked to hauliers' advantage, since they moved smaller consignments, not on fixed routes or timetables and very seldom had to worry about inspection. So from that time onwards the livestock trade began to desert the railways, and cattle wagons had to find other uses.
There were plenty of loads that needed a roof and lots of fresh air- perishable traffic like crated fresh vegetables (Broccoli for example: Has everyone seen the BTF film 'Train Time?'), or a certain by-product of cattle farming, which travelled in sacks and needed a certain amount of weatherproofing and LOTS of ventilation.

Very nice kit. The W&LLR is my favourite railway because it's the first narrow gauge railway I went on & when I go down to stay with my aunt Nicky(The foxy vet), it's easy to reach because she lives in Welshpool in an upside-down house(she lives on a hill). I should of mentioned that when I went to Ray's railway for a steam up, guess what the bloke with the Billy gave me?

For painting, use thinned down enamel paint to make it look old. Alternatively, you could paint it normally then get wet & dry paper around the edges of the wood.
