bolier testing
Hi all, I am looking at taking my loco's to other members garden railways when they have an open day but not sure about the statement that I need to have an up to date boiler test certificate before I would be allowed to run my locos, my loco's are 4 year old Caradoc and a 3 year old Leader both were purchased from a dealer and came with a boiler certificate. how long does the original certificate last? only information I can find relates to 5" or 7.5 scale.
grateful for any advise on this subject.

Generally, it's only the model engineering fraternity who insist on boiler certificates - visitors to Association meetings don't need 'em. See http://www.16mm.org.uk/newsite/insurance/default.html for more details.

Many of the local 16mm area groups have someone who will do it or local model engineering societies.
Personally I think it is all a pointless exercise to satisfy insurance companies that don't know what they are talking about for as far as I know there has never been a 16mm or gauge 1 boiler explosion or at least one that has caused a serious injury. The pressure in these boilers is the same as a bike tyre and the gauge glass will go long before the boiler plus the volume of water contained is too small to make much of a bang. I have seen a gauge glass blow and unless you had your head up against the cab it would have no effect. You are much more likely to get hurt from steam from the tea urn.

Hi Freelander,
I am also a member of the CM&EC group.
If you are worried about the statement in Bulletin about valid boiler tests, as far as I am aware that only applies to running at Mold & Celyn Model Engineers.
As long as your boilers are under the 3 Bar Litre limit and are commercially built (which yours are) there isn't a problem.
