Jim's Models Bogie Van

Post by laalratty » Sat May 11, 2013 9:22 pm

Members who have been on here for a while might have noticed a distinct lack of postings from me about rolling stock (or indeed anything really I'm afraid). This is a reflection of how much university has taken up my life. However, with my last ever Uni exam just over a week ago I have finally been able to get on with building a new bogie van for my Afonglas and Nant Llwyd Railway, purchased from Jim's Models at the G-Scale show, held in the very easy to get to location of the Stafford County Showground. I actually purchased two, they were on special offer and having bartered the price down thanks to a desire to fit my own choice of bogies I got a pair of wagons for £60, ie £30 each!
Image
The van is made of wood, mostly laser cut but all of the stripwood is supplied as lengths that need to be cut by hacksaw, as certainly used to be the case with IP Engineering kits. Also, there are no tabs to help alignment, that is all down to you with the help of some pencil markings that the instructions tell you to put down initially
Image
The style is very much that of an IP Engineering kit, so it should match my IP four wheel vans very well. I've just got the last bits of bracing to add to this side
Image
The construction is very solid, thanks to internal bracing. Time wise, I've been working on this for a few quick modelling sessions now, it's certainly not the fastest build but you could probably get it done in 2 or 3 days if you stuck at it all day. The instructions aren't the greatest, the diagrams are helpful but not always clear and the photo is very unclear and pixelated. Strangely for me, I've not done many modifications, in fact only the stripwood on the ends, I've swapped 1/16th by 1/8th for 1/8th square as I think it looks better. The roof is metal, a completely new one for me so we'll see how sticking and painting that goes.
Meanwhile, I've also come down with a bad case of scratchbuilt carriage sickness, having not done one for a long time the desire to start bashing around with wood again is overwhelming. So I've drawn up this...
Image
It's a Vale of Rheidol Summer coach, only Perfect World does a kit for this but several NWAG members have either Rheidol saloon coaches or a Rheidol loco, yet one of these is on the front of nearly every VoR train. So I've offered to NWAG members to build one for them, and I've had two expressions of interest thus far (I can't really justify one for myself plus I have quite literally run out of stock storage space!) I've bought wood to build them out of today and so hopefully Afonglas Works will soon become productive once again....

No photos tonight but the van has got all of its beading on now, and is awaiting fitting of the roof. Meanwhile, the components of the first Vale of Rheidol summer coach has been cut out, with the possibility of three more following on, all for sale to other NWAG members. That will probably be deserving of its own topic once construction gets properly underway.

Finally got round to getting a pic of current progress
Image
All the strapping was completed with a nice amount of stripwood left over, something which always pleases me as it can be used on other projects! The roof was not an issue in the end, it stuck easily with epoxy resin with the use of my IP engineering roof jig and some weights. Certainly it was less hassle then most wooden or plasticard roofs.
Next up is the painting, and so despite this looking quite complete don't expect to see it hit the rails any time too soon.... although I'd hope to get it out some point during the summer. I still need to purchase the bogies as well, these will be the large wooden bogie IP engineering make. Meanwhile, I've been working on the Vale of Rheidol summer coach project which is just about to gain its own thread...

Can't believe it has been such a long time since I did anything on this van (I blame personal inertia and the VoR coaches) however with the purchase of the bogies at Elsecar and a tin of paint a few days later this van does now look like it might actually be finished before the year is out!

I've done it, actually finished the dear and before the year is out (just.....)
Actually had its first run on the Lady Anne double header at my Christmas steamup, but it wasn't quite done as some painting needed completing, and its also had a great big lump of lead stuck to the floor as it was a bit on the light side

Image
The lettering is letraset bought a year or 3 back. I must admit the kit did have some brass rod to make handrails, which I seem to have used on something else and so it isn't quite done, but its good enough until I can find some rod
Now, I believe there is another one of these waiting for me tomorrow, oh joy!

Sure enough, I did get a second one of these this morning, along with a pair of PVMR 3 ton slate waggons. Got something to be getting on with anyway

That'll keep you out of mischief for a bit.................. Me? I got 2 IP Engineering VoR matchboarded coaches (which will make a rake of 3 with the passenger brake van that's been "in build" for YEARS and keeps on getting pushed back as more important projects come along - but this rake's GOT to be done by August) a Swift 16 Gunpowder van for Flagg Fluorspar and a HGLW flat truck which is going to form the basis for my MOTY entry................

They say the second one you build should be a bit quicker than the first.

Well those 4 are going to make an unusual train...

Like the bogie van, very nice!

Watch out for the clearance between floor and wheels on the 3 ton slate waggons - it's pretty tight. I had to reduce the flange depth a little on mine to get them to turn freely...

Cheers,

Andrew.

That's a nice looking van. Love the colour, it just looks right.

Thought you might be interested in one I did a few months back. The only thing I did different from the instructions was to fit the doors to represent outside sliding doors with the addition of some lengths of plastic angle. Just thought it gave the whole thing a slightly wider appearance.

No one gave me anything railway related for Christmas - but I did get a very nice LEGO VW Camper kit. Of course the day after Christmas I ordered a dirt cheap Bachmann L&B Lyn for exploring 7/8ths with....
