Edrig Cylinders

Post by Big Jim » Wed Nov 06, 2013 10:28 pm

Does anyone know if Edrig came with the later type cylinders that allow for better slow running. Or was it the earlier type?

Wasn't aware that Edrig had different size cylinders or were different in running respects. I have had mine since January 2008 and it has run fine just as it came out of the box. Very controllable over a wide range of speeds.

The Accucraft Ruby models had 3/8 inch cylinders to start, later changed to 1/2 inch cylinders . The larger cylinders make for a better running model. I have an early Mimi (Ruby ) which I changed the cylinders over to 1/2 inch cylinders. Makes a big difference in running speed. I also have a newer Ruby #5 (Porter ) which has the larger cylinders. It runs very nicely just as it came out of the box.

As far as I'm aware, the only Accucraft loco fitted with the small cylinders in this country was the Excelsior. With those proving to have rather a narrow power band Accucraft increased the cylinder size for its next loco Superior and they have kept that size the same since (so with Caradoc, Mortimer, Edrig, Wrekin, Lawley, Joan etc)

Ahhh, I seem to have got my wires crossed a bit. I had heard that there were small cylinders fitted to early accucraft locos. But as it appears it was only excelsior I need not worry about buying one.

Looks very nice. Was it a kit you used?
Any chance of a few more pics?
I am after one to adapt possibly using swift sixteens body kit.

Here are a couple of pics of my Edrig bashing. They both used Mortimer cabs in slightly different ways so fairly easy mods.
Swift16 or Mikes models do some very nice kits that really change the loco. Might do one of those next time. The second one was an Edrig chassis with Ragleth boiler etc and new smokebox but they are all basically the same thing.
