IP 7/8ths Skip

Post by astropsidings » Tue Jun 04, 2013 11:43 am

I've just finished the first of a couple of IP Engineering 7/8ths skips. Quite hefty as the bucket is white metal (the chassis is plasticard). I used Accucraft wheels on my 18in gauge version as the axles are a little short on the wheels supplied with the kit - they would need a lot of packing in the axleboxes to stop the axles dropping out.

Next, an 18in gauge IP cabless Ruston...

Fabulous! :hello1:

have you used "Real Rust" or is that a paint technique?

Its paint. The whole lot was sprayed with Halfords red coloured primer, then painted by hand in various shades of rust with talcum powder stippled in to give the texture. The chassis was then sprayed with JLTRT BR Southern Coach Green using a salt mask (the salt retained with a coat of hairpsray). Finally weathering powders were used, and the whole lot sprayed with Testors Dulcote.

Now that is brilliant!
Thanks

What method did you choose to join the hefty whitemetal parts please?

And is the relatively flimsy frame up to supporting the heavy bucket please?

Thanks, David

David,

I used low melt solder, but a non-temperature controlled iron. It wasn't as awkward as I expected. I tacked the bits together first then went back and soldered them properly.

The chassis frame is a bit flimsy initially but fixing the end stanchions to it stiffens it up and it takes the weight of the bucket without a problem. I may use Talisman brass axleboxes on the next one rather than the white metal axleboxes supplied given the weight.

Have you seen Steph's post regarding the building of these kits here: http://www.7-8ths.info/index.php?topic=16684562.

For comparison, a short raft of skips, two from resin kits, a Simply 7/8ths example, and lastly the IP skip:

The chassis made of plasticard it doesn't make them top heavy then

Despite the bucket being fairly hefty it isn't top heavy. The stantions and other detail on the frame are white metal castings which help.

My line is only temporary, the track is lightly laid with some twist in places, and the skip hasn't capsized yet....

I do like these but are iunsure of the chassis

I've made up three of these and they are a bit curate's egg. Top half of heavy metal and bottom half of light and flimsy plastic. Making the chassis in a box section helps rigidity, but I still feel the need to handle them with extra care. However they look and run well behind my quarry Hunslet.
