Milton Locomotive Works Cranks

Post by Jonnyb » Fri Jan 18, 2013 2:35 pm

I was after a set of these but unfortunetly they don't make them anymore, but would make them if there was enough interest (25 sets or more)

So if 23 (two sets for me) people on here would like some please reply to this post.

Alternatively as I imagine take up would be quite low, if anyone has the ability to make me a couple of sets I would gladly pay for them.

If you're talking about the cranks for the Roundhouse Charles, I'd take a set.

I would have been very keen to buy a set, having previously fitted a set to my DJB Robert. These were purchased ages ago for another project which is now nearing completion but I was unable to buy another set!

NB Check it out but I think these cranks are suitable only for R/hse locos with fixed, ie unsprung axles, see below.

Another supplier said it was a possible item for him but that now seems unlikely.

After some thought I thought I might be able to make my own, and it is fairly easy. The MLW cranks are beautifully milled from the solid but the principle is a bit stuck on the back of the R/hse cranks which occupies the space between the rear of the R/hse crank and the frames, and forms a skirt round the bearing boss protruding from the frames. Thus it may not work with sprung axles.

Briefly I soft soldered a brass plate with a hole to accomodate the bearing boss to the back of the R/hse crank which is brass under the plating, and filed to profile. If you wish you can take it a stage further and turn the outer face flat in the lathe. The R/hse cranks seem to be pressings leaving a curved edge to the outer face and sides at a slight angle to the 90 degree.

Hopefully there is a pic of the Robert with mods to suit my tastes, the djb design is fine as it is, and a pic of the home made cranks.

Should have said in earlier post, in my view a significant visual improvement is to substitute countersunk socket screws for the R/hse supplied slotted ones used to secure the cranks.

The slotted head screws on the R/hse cylinders I've changed to hex head, M2 on the Robert (but BA on some locos), similarly changed those on the buffer beams.
