Axle "slop"

Post by Narrow Minded » Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:37 pm

I know most Mamodicians on here are 32mm, but does anyone know if my Dream Steam replacement steel wheelsets are missing some spacers??

There are no spacers on the axles (just the bearings and retainers), and as a result there's an alarming amount of sideways play to both axles.
I've definitely seen a photo of someone's loco up-ended and showing her underside ( ) and there appeared to be brass spacers fitted between the backs of the wheels and the bearings.

Is this as they should be supplied, or is it another "after market mod"? (And if it is a mod, how practical is it to remove and subsequently replace the steel wheels?)

Many thanks in advance with this one chaps :D

As far as I know there should be some brass spacers, other wise there will be a huge amount of sideways play. I think this is possible case of missing parts.

Mamod 45mm Wheels

Hi Greg,

Yes your 45mm wheels should have some brass spacers outboard of the bearings.

A set of Mamod 45mm wheels, spacers from the front axle of the IP Eng wheels (converting to 32mm), and the back axle of the IP Eng 45m wheels.

I'd get in touch with Dream Steam to get them fixed or replaced.

Chris Cairns.
