Well we've got a station master, (appropiating the railway again ;) ) But yes, an Ivor should be next on the list. Hmm that gives me an idea.

I don't feel confident in painting him
Wonder why Locolines went for the unpainted figure, as I'm sure his bulk buying would have not put up the price much for a painted one, particularly when they were available painted from Rob Bennett at Merstham.

I've been given the task of building one of these for a friend. However, all the printed overlays are coming away from the backing card so I have decided to substitute every part for plasticard which I will then paint and decal. I will use some of the overlays onto the plasticard where needed.
This should give a stronger structure and I won't worry about it getting wet when run outside.
It's a bit worrying that the card parts started delaminating in the first place, but it set me thinking that plasticard was the way to go.

the IP chassis is reccommended on their site for Prince, Tiny and the Quarry Hunslet kits.
Very true, but you can fit what you want - this one's an LGB "Toytrain" chassis converted for battery.

The solvent is a bit dirty but that wont be seen once sanded and painted.

Looking good, you could take the opertunity to add details which arn't included in th locolines kits such as, cab roof rails from bunker to roof, tea tap valve (very important!), two lamps on the front buffer beam which were blue I think and also a nicer darker green. Ivor never was this bright pea green that the locolines kit is made in.

As 2mm plasticard is a lot heavier than card, I will need to add some weight to the boiler as I'm expecting Ivor to be tail heavy. The battery pack should fit in there. I've added a finishing panel to the rear of cab roof which I think improves the look.

Thanks for those tips Mr Bond. I've been chasing about looking for the right paint to match the printed sheets but I realise now that this doesn't really matter. This model is being built on a deadline at short notice (hopefully in time) for Ivor the Engine weekend at the Great Central (on the Rothley Station Garden Railway) February 27th - 28th 2010 http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/Events.aspx?ID=225 . I hate rushing things but without motivation I tend to leave things half finished.

Using Locolines drawings and measurements, the roof overhang is 8mm too short to enable fitting of the roof to bunker bars :( . Had I studied the "REAL" Ivor beforehand I would have made the roof longer as required (Locolines ignore this feature). I might extend the roof later (or extend bunker forwards) but it seems to look less cluttered without them. If I build another, I'll sort the discrepancy from the start. Tea valve and teapot definitely will be added though.

Having got the bug for these card kits, I might do the rebuilt Funkey diesel next .... in plasticard of course.

Another thing I have noticed is that the printed smokebox front is quite a bit larger than the boiler (section of PVCu pipe) supplied in my kit. This will probably mean that the side tanks will sit further inboard than the finished Locolines picture (below) would indicate. Gives me room to fit the tea tap though.

Last year I had for my birthday the resin Ivor model, originally it was £60 (which I would'nt have paid) But this one was half price :D from the Ffestiniog shop due to a slight bit of damage to the whistle pipe. I thought the pics may be useful to some of you, who knows what is correct with a model of a cartoon though

That Harrop Ivor is very nice. The damage looks like an easy repair. The pics have given me some reference for my own Ivior build, thanks for posting them. Damn, I must have one.

Regarding previous pointers on my plasticard build ... because the Locolines card kit has the roof too short for the fitment of cab rear pillars, I decided that rather than lengthen the roof, I would move the cab further back by 6mm and fit the pillars rather than ignoring them (you can just see where the cab front was fixed originally). This makes the cab interior a little narrower and hopefully "Jones the Steam will fit (I am building this for someone else and I don't have the figure to hand). Had I looked a little more closely at Ivor instead of relying too much on the Locolines plans, I would have made the cab roof overhang 6mm longer and made the 2mm x 4mm pillars as an integral part of the front of the bunker. Still, with hindsight, the model I make for myself will have all the guesswork ironed out.
The front ballast box has been filled with sand to hopefully give Ivor better balance. The push pin buffers have been enhanced with larger brass drawing pin heads.
