Penryhn Ragleth

Post by LlanpwllBrynwyn » Sun Apr 15, 2012 1:13 am

Hi all, new to the forums here.  I picked my Ragleth up from the show at Peterborough after she had been lined out in Penrhyn livery by Geoff of Lightlines.  I think she wears it quite well, her driver seems 'chuffed' anyway...

...She is named after the future Mrs.  Thus the naming scheme also follows that of the Penrhyn Mainline.

As a newcomer to 16mm my modding skills are still quite limited.  But mods to date include fitting the buffer adaptors from Back 2 Bay 6, a Summerlands Chuffer, a Brass safety valve cover from Swift Sixteen and real coal in the bunker.  I also have a fire irons set and Penrhyn bucket to add when time allows.  If anyone has any comments/ideas for future mods would be most welcome!

All I need now is the line to run it on...

Looks nice with those lines. You and I are in the same boat: collecting rolling stock, but no railway. :(

Looking good there! I have recently acquired a Ragleth - it was 'any colour you like as long as it is black' I had also decided to emulate the Penrhyn style lining. I am going to have a go using some self adhesive lining that I already have for model aircraft. I do have a lining pen that was given to me but havent had the nerve to try it yet, I might use it on some rolling stock first to practice. I like the valve cover you have added I also like the fact you have replaced the coal with the real stuff - how did you get the fake stuff out??

I was cleaning the loco up for sending off for its lining using some dish washing detergent to get the oil off and something in it just dissolved the glue holding the generic stuff in place. I'm sure someone else here can offer some wisdom as to how to get it out...

Spot on! The only thing I'd do on top of the details you've mentioned is to paint the dome to match the boiler- not a fan of shiny domes.

Is there anything Penrhyn (or LNWR for that matter) lined black doesn't suit? I think Penrhyn's scheme just has the edge though.

The lining really brings the engine alive.

It really is worth it, it is my first live steam loco. I bought it last summer from Kent Garden Railways. It was either this or one of the basic roundhouse locos, the reverser and fitted rc won me over in the end.

Just wondering if I should paint the smokebox matt black or just leave it be, any opinions?

Have already ordered a Roundhouse Charles as my next steamer, no prizes for guessing what lining that is going to have...

It's not especially obvious in that photo (unlike the dome!) but it has to be a definite yes from me- they look much better matt!

As for "to buy a Ragleth or not" there is a big price jump just come in. If you do decide you want one be quick- you might be lucky and find one at the old price. It'd pay to shop around certainly, especially if you aren't too fussed on colour.

That looks real good, A decent barbeque paint from an aerosol can should be ok for the smoke box, may i suggest as well as painting the dome black you could paint the boiler band(s) as well, cheers, Rob

Here is the photo Geoff sent me of the back while I was waiting to collect it...  (I know the roof isnt sitting correctly there)

Total cost was £185, which I thought was pretty good for the time and effort involved... I'd rather spend a few quid getting one generic model looking somewhat unique, than having 2 or 3 locos that look like they just rolled out of the factory.

Here is an update on how Ragleth is progressing.

I decided to follow advice on here and paint the dome/boiler bands, and yes I agree the finish looks alot better without so much shiny brass everywhere.

I also made a bracket for the bucket out of the brass sprue left over from peco fishplates

The swift sixteen toolbox was sprayed at the same time as the smokebox, hence the matt appearance, the cab roof was also sprayed matt to enhance its appearance.

The fire iron holders were made out of garden wire soldered to yet more of the leftover sprue from the fishplates and bolted onto the tank with 14ba bolts, which were an absolute nightmare to locate the nuts on.  Alot of people use a tool box to cover the gas inlet, I decided to use the fire irons set I bought, and altho it does not cover it completely (with the added bonus of not having to remove things to gas the loco!) to my eye it detracts enough from it.

I also wanted the firemans shovel from the set to be on display, so I stuck it on top of the coal in the basket.  My intended line wont be a long scale distance so i'd like to think the loco only needs firing at the stations and not en-route.

The bufferbeams were repainted, I know the Orange colour used is more prototypical but I wanted mine to be a little more red, the backs were sprayed black also

Here are some pictures for your enjoyment:

The only thing left to do is fit the lamp irons and paint the upper cab interior cream.  I would also like to fit a working whistle to it eventually as well!
