Sad to say that I've had yet more (related) trouble from my Andel Baguley-Drewry :cry:

The previous failure of the bonding between the adjustable wheel collars and wheels (which has resulted in the loco being "fixed gauge" :? ) has raised its ugly head again but this time between the drive sprocket and axle!

Having removed the Delrin chain, araldited the sprocket to the axle / wheel and refitted the chain (let me say that bit again ..... removed and refitted the Delrin chain - so much easier to say than do!! :roll: ), I've just come back indoors after a trial run.
Light engine? fine - very promising.
One NWNGR bogie coach and it failed again! :shock:

I hope Andy can suggest something because this is a rather expensive loco to be wasting so much time and effort on rather than enjoying running - in the long term though, I rather suspect I'm going to have to completely replace the running gear with something more reliable :cry:

Anyone else have one of these?

If you have the workshop facilities, or know someone, drill a hole through the sprocket and axle and use a suitable size pin, or tap the hole in the axle and use a small screw if you think you might want to remove the sprocket in the future. Even epoxies don't give much of a bond on acetal plastics like Delrin, although there are a couple of cyanoacrylates available that claim to be able to glue the stuff.

The only way epoxy might work is to use a small dental burr in a motor tool to put a few shallow pits in the bore of the plastic sprocket, then roughen the axle by rolling a file over it where you want the sprocket to go. That should allow the epoxy to key the parts together when it hardens. Use the slow stuff, it gives a stronger bond than the 5 minute epoxies and is also harder when it sets.

The same would work on the wheel bushes if they let go again, although I'd probably turn new ones if it was mine.

I don't think the loco brand makes a lot of difference as they all seem to use the same sources for gears and chain sprockets.

FWIW. I haven't had a problem with wheel bushes and gears on IP 45mm gauge wheelsets, but I pinned the axle gears from the get go. I also turned up new bushes to fix a wobble in a couple of wheelsets and made sure they were a good tight press fit.

Thanks for that, all sound advice!

I've already tried drilling through to pin the drive sprocket - unfortunately the axles are laughing at my drill bits :roll:

The collar/wheel problem is actually worse than I've mentioned. The failure was the bonding between the brass collar and resin cast wheels.
However, I've discovered that the drive wheel (on the axle with the drive sprocket) isn't actually "true" when I examine the profile. I suspect that being set at 45mm the "bulge" in the wheel profile is knocking the delrin chain, which of course is then pushing the sprocket out on the axle, breaking any bond.
My first course of action will have to be replacing the wheels (I'd be happier with metal wheels on a "working" loco anyway ;)

do not try to drill sprockets / axle.
this will destroy your drill bits and invalidate any warranty.

There is a fix to this problem using developments from the articulated bagnall. In the first instance AnDel Models should be your first point of contact as I have the responsibility to put this defect right. If you choose to do this yourself Then I will not pick up the pieces if your fix does not work.

If you replace the wheelsets with steel wheels you will lose significant traction abilities.

Oops! :oops:

Too late - sorry Andy, but while I was editing and uploading a video this evening, I've dismantled the loco and replaced the wheelsets with Accucraft items ;)

As it turns out (I'm glad Serendipidy works in my stores department!), the Accy wheelsets are a spot-on match for yours - wheel diameter / axle length and diameter.
The sprockets and axles have been drilled and pinned and the loco re-assembled, tested and outshopped! :D

Sorry I missed your Email and response on here, I'm sure the mods you've carried out on the new loco's will avert the probs I've encountered, and I still hope you get the Baguley back in production 'cos it's a little beaut'!
