What's your favourite livery

Just a bit of fun really. What's your favourite liveries for locomotives, passenger and freight stock.I usually go for the very ornate victorian liveries. Here's my choices:
Locomotives- FR 1880's
Carriages- that of LNWR
wagons- GWR grey

Locomotives: GER blue lined in red edged in black.
Carriages: Brown/Olive and Cream or Teak
Wagons: Stone grey, all the metal parts and everything below the floor black.

I'd agree with you and the FR loco livery of the 1880's is virtually Midland colours, but with white edging to the balck lining.

GWR grey is perhaps a bit dark, but grey covers all the shades that you can think of!

I will be painting my FR coaches in the LNW colours though I haven't seen any Ashburys in those colours.

Incidentally the colour name that the FR use is L&Y coach plum: that is now (in gloss) discontinued by Precision Paints - they sent me LNWR plum which is the same colour!. Northing came of an enquiry to the FR Heritage group, so there mustn't be any photos of them.

Re the bugboxes anyone know how Merths sniffer did his louvres in triangular section - again no reply from him to an enquiry?

I have a LGB Stainz that is intended as a Donor for 'Tal' eventually - the early one if I can find a reasonable drawing - I'm halfway there I think.   Yes I still model Colorado narrow gauge - this will be my 'funny train' because I like them!

Locos - black - steam lined out Penrhyn-style:

PW Dept locos - Underground red (v dark)

Passenger stock - LNER Excursion green & cream (á la FR in the 60s)

Diesel railcars: cream over red, County Donegal style

Goods stock: grey

All with dark grey roofs (except PW Dept locos - light grey)

Oddly enough, that's the livery spec for the MDLR!

Locos: apple green, lined out in black and white (NEVER yellow or red!). Better still with dark green panelling, as on the GNR or the Mersey Railway.

Coaches: varnished teak - partly because it's beautiful in its own right, but also because it goes well with any locomotive livery.

Goods stock - grey, with ironwork picked out in black. (This is the MVR's goods stock scheme!)

though I haven't seen any Ashburys in those colours.

They varied, earlier (before the introduction of bogie stock when the 4 wheeled third stock would be maroon/red) they were painted all over deep purple with the star shape either side on the lower panels, later pictures seem to show  them with a white/ cream upper with plum lower. The cream/plum livery seems to vary in the way it is applied over the years, even boston lodge are not certain of precise liveries. For example bug boxes were once painted half and half and once with all panelling and beading plum with white/cream upper panels. Again you can't be sure whether the colour was white or cream or the later colour was maroon or red.

locos: deep bronze green with black edging and yellow lining

coaches: tan beading with red panelling or chocolate brown with gold lining with triple inturned square corners

wagons: grey with black iron work

Loco's - GWR Brunswick Green.
Coaches - Tough one, GWR chocolate & cream or BR Blood & Custard.

Freight - GWR/BR unfitted grey. Also with black Ironwork as applicable.

My favourites are the tasteful ones that really suite the particular pieces of rolling stock

Steam loco's: blackberry black and lined out either L&Y or LNWR style.

Diesels: Red and Cream (think Clogher Valley "Pheonix")

Coaches: Plum and spilt milk, though I am partial to blood and custard.

Freight stock: grey with black iron work. Midland Railway grey is best, there was never an exact shade.

Rail cars, red with black edging or I do have another plan for the future.

my favourite livery has to be LNWR lined Cherry Black. I also love the County Donegal liveries, in fact quite a lot of CDR is in evidence on my line, as all the stock is (or to be) fitted with vac pipes and safety chains!

All the locos on my railway are unlined plain black with red motion.  Bufferbeams are generally red except the Ruby which has varnished wooden ones!

Passenger stock has no standard yet, due to the rather motley collection of items!

Freight stock is all the same drab shade of Humbrol matt grey (number 27, I'm not sad enough to remember, its in front of me!  :lol: ).  Detail and strapping is painted black.
