running Caradoc

Post by pauly » Thu Feb 19, 2009 7:53 pm

I have finally got the courage up to run caradoc on blocks for the first time!

It was quite a challenge getting the fire to burn in th boiler and not in the smokebox but I got it right in the end

she is very stiff and clunkey at the moment
but will improve with running in

the burner was a lot quieter than I imagined and I can see the appeal of these locos :)

all in all shes a goodun

she will need a lot more running in on blocks before she ventures out into the garden but like children these little engines have to crawl before they can walk and walk before they can run. :)

You will also find she'll run much more smoothly when she's on some track. I don't know why this should be, but it's certainly true!

Pauly,

My Roundhouse-Beck 'Anna' when first lit up tended to burn in the smokebox rather than the boiler. All I did was to turn the gas down until the gas was sucked into the flue with that satisfying 'pop'.

I'm pretty certain that applies to most locos :?

somebody told me that before lighting, turn the gas on and leave it on for 8 seconds, this then clears the liquid gas and makes it easier to light.

well Sillybilly posted this

Anyone who wants to join the 'Edrig Club' basically if you've got a Edrig, Caradoc or Mortimer, then pop andysleigh a PM and he'll add you to the group, it's viewable here www.gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/groupcp.php .
Doesn't make a difference to your 'status', if there is demand for further groups e.g. Mamod, then start a new topic in forum improvments!

Running on blocks does not fully "run in" the loco. As the wheels are spinning in mid-air there is no weight on the axles and their bearings, so not much running-in happens with them! Best to run it on track (or a rolling road), as already suggested.
