Constructing a linkage that works every time and can cope with valve gear that varies in its distance from the cab depending on whether the loco is on a curve or not is the challenge. Whichever end is in reverse gear has to have the die block in the expansion link rigidly held at the top of the link, otherwise it will go out of gear. To achieve the flexibility required for curves and the rigidity required to hold the gear in place would certainly be a challenge. The trick is, of course, to have the linkage running along the loco's centre line to reduce the amount of movement of the power units in relation to the cradle.

Other commercial Garratt manufacturers have also had to tackle the problem:
- The Locobox Darjeeling Garratt is an oscillator (so no valve gear) and has a steam reversing valve under the boiler.
- The Locobox 2-6-0-0-6-2 Garratt was only available with radio control I think ... I've never seen a manual one.
- The Accucraft NGG16 was available with manual reversing achieved by a wheel in the cab that used bevel gears to drive a shaft running the length of the loco. The shaft was then attached to the valve gear weighbar by more bevel gears and universal joints.

The drain cocks on Festiniog Fairlies are pulled open on right-hand curves because the linkage does not follow the loco's centre line.

Are Roundhouse making these mods themselves for Russell or using Locoworks?

The Garrat would never fit on my line and for the price I would rather buy a coal fired loco.

ELR do a coal fired Garrat for 5k so if you have over 3k to spend on a gas loco I am sure you can find a measly £1450 extra ;)

I've just found this picture...
Image
... which shows the reverser linkage on the full-size loco. It looks to be a fine combination of universal and splined joints!

You can see they've included this non-functioning detail on the model.

I'm sure some sort of shaft that could rotate through say 90 degrees or so could be made to work, even if it went down one side it could be equipped with the same kind of "square shaft" arrangement as you see on a Shay geared locomotive's drive shaft to allow it to change length. That's probably what the real thing has.

It wouldn't need to be too fancy, as there is no need for it to be variably adjustable with the "simplified" valve gear... just three positions after all.

Anyway it won't happen so I guess speculating about how easy it would be to make is a waste of time. I don't like the idea that electronics are part of the basic functioning of a steam engine, but that's just my attitude. It's a fine-looking model and I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at it.

This won't work, as has been discussed on here before. The burner doesn't have enough power to provide the boil rate required to supply two engines. The Roundhouse DHR Garratt has a twin burner boiler, exactly the same as the Accucraft NGG16. Peter Angus Garratts have a ceramic burner in a more conventional firebox to supply the required heat (and cross tubes in the flues).

Roundhouse sold all of the first batch at Peterborough, and are well into the second batch. The general reaction at the show was very positive.

a Fowler boiler is not enough for two billy chassis kit...
i prepare drawing to build a k1 and as you write i will be use 2 billy chassis but i need to build the boiler and the chassis

but for shure 3500£ for the class D is very expensive until in € it's 5000€ :( :( :( :(

The ELR Garratt gas-fired loco is GBP 4500. Sniff ....

Argyle have also mentioned the prospect of having Accucraft make a 2'6" gauge Puffing Billy Garrat but if the NA is anything to go by it will be years away and cost a fortune and also be too big for many 32mm gauge lines.

I wasn´t able to find any reference to the Puffing Billy Garratt project ANY LONGER on the website. Maybe I didn´t look hard enough.

I would guess with the size of the loco it will be at least £3500 being much bigger than the Roundhouse Garrat and comparable to the larger US models.

With the German Accucraft Saxon Meyer there will be several large bendy locos available over the next 2 years that I would love to own but stand little chance of affording!

I've just looked up the size of a G Class Garrat and 49'10" over couplers that would scale to 800mm in 16mm scale one dam big loco!

It's not just the 49'10" over coupler pull lines to consider when it comes to a model, they were also 8' wide and 10'8" to the top of the chimney.

To all intents and purposes they were a 3'6" gauge Garratt regauged to 2'6", to get the performance the VR specified.
