Accucraft Mannin Holly Green Livery?

Post by cncmodeller » Tue Jan 06, 2015 9:11 am

It was good to see the new IOM Mannin loco by Accucraft finally start to emerge but was somewhat surprised at the picture of the Green liveried version.
I was expecting a lighter shade of green and black and white lining which in all my colour images is the livery shown.
Or have I missed something here? perhaps Its an earlier livery?

The "holly green" as depicted by Accucraft would probably have been the engine's original livery as delivered in 1926. The light green you are thinking of is "Ailsa green", which became the standard livery after Lord Ailsa took over the IoMR in 1968. Although Mannin carried Ailsa green for display purposes, she never actually ran in this livery as she was withdrawn in 1964, and has never steamed since.

There is a useful history of IoMR locomotive (and indeed coach) liveries on the IoMSRSA website:

Decided to go for the other Indian red version to match the other Accy locomotives

Mannin was originally painted in the second version of the Dark (Holly) Green livery when she was built in 1926.  The IMR used various versions of the Holly Green livery from 1873 down to 1945.  The original version seems to have been lined white/black/vermillion.  I seem to think that the livery was fairly standard Beyer, Peacock practice, as the 'Tryggve' class in Norway were similarly painted when delivered, though 'Hunin' survives in a light green livery panelled out in dark green.  The 'Henry Frog' - you can have any colour you like so long as it is green - theory applied before about 1875, as most railways opted for green as being reasonably cheap and very durable.  It was just the shade that varied.

By 1910, the IMR livery had been simplified to dark green with red/black/red lining, as is shown in the photograph taken of G H Wood shortly after delivery in 1905, which was reprinted in David Lloyd's 'Manx Peacocks.'  Some photos from the 1930s show - for example Peveril - running in dark green with a wide black line as the only adornment.  Whether this was a deliberate thing, or the result of being caught short by the onset of the summer season, I know not.  However, there was a tendency to cut corners to save money in the late 1930s - hence the introduction of brown livery for second string carriages c.1932 to avoid the cost of having to repaint them in the full Lake and Off-White livery.

Mannin was running in unlined green in 1949 when she was caught in an early colour photo of the railway.  The carriages in the background are in unlined all-over brown or purple-lake, which was the war time livery.  I seem to remember that she (No.16) had received serious attention during WW2 - hence the economy repaint.  Mannin probably went to 'the Red' within a year of that photo being taken, and is recorded as being in red in either 1951 or 53, as she would have been due for a major shopping within 1 to 3 years of the 1949 photograph being taken. Amongst the earliest locomotives to be repainted red were Nos. 4, 5, 10, and 12 - all of which received significant attention 1945/6.

FWIW, the origins of the light green livery involved the Rev. Teddy Boston, a GEM kit, and a pot of Woolies light green paint.  He showed the completed kit painted in a close approximation to LNER apple green to Sir Philip Wombwell - Ailsa's manager - and the rest, they say, is history.  To my eye, the original 1967/8 was a bit yellower than that carried by G. H. Wood today, but I prefer the shade currently used.

Mannin was painted in light green for display purposes in 1967, as she was part of the line up of OOU locomotives put on show at St John's.  She was repainted to unlined red in 1975 before going into the Museum, and was finally lined out in the 1990s - I assume because someone had done the 'what's wrong with this picture' thing and figured out she was unlined!

I think I would have to say that Ailsa Green is my least favourite IMR livery after the Caley Blue carried by Hutchinson in the 1980s and 90s.  Otherwise, I have a hard time choosing between the Holly Green of the early days and the 'Sheard's Red.'  I remember being very relieved back in 1978 when 'Loch' was repainted to Midland Red!

Cheers,
Peter in AZ
