steam up pit
here is todays progress, should be able to fit the last step slab tomorrow and maybe the bricks for the first step edge.
The two floor slabs slope slightly to the middle and I have left a gap between these for water to run in ti the soak away
The ground around is level but I'll put and edge, possibly some old half slabs that I have.

Wow! Gremlin, that is really looking like the doggies dangley bits. Not only is it practical and well designed but it looks really good too. I'm making notes for potential inclusion in the Soar Valley Light's construction drawings.
Good idea about the edging

That is a cracking pit you have built yourself there.
As other have said watch the cold flagstones as according to many an old wives tale they can have unforeseen and painful consequences.
This seems to have turned into a bit of an 'engineers job'
A hole in the ground would do, a hole in the ground with a few blocks for a step would be better, a hole in the ground with proper steps and a proper base... etc etc.
More power to your elbow.

If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!
Thanks guys it was a lot of effort and funny you should mention my elbow. This could have been what has given me Tennis elbow which could take several months to heal up. Oh well at least I have my hole in the ground.
We have had a lot of rain last night and today, I can see water down through the gap probably upto the bottom of the lintel so I will watch and see what happens. I'll let you know if the frogs move in.

Well we had a lot of rain over a couple of days, the water level didn't rise and this morning when I looked there was no sign of water through the gap. I know it's going to get a lot wetter over the winter but signs are good that the soak away is working as I'd hoped.
Hopefully get to try out the pit and new track work at the weekend.
