Bearing in mind that I use plastic chassis,is it feasible to fit one side with insulated wheels and a wiper, and have a short piece of track "live" at 12 volt. The idea is to park a loco on the live section which will then charge itself. The loco's with a lower voltage would have a resistor fitted to bring the voltage down.

It sounds feasible to me - not that you should ever take my advice on anything electrical as I still subscribe to the magic smoke theory...

The "Magic Smoke" Theory is actually very sound - I've proven it several times, on each occasion, when the magic smoke escaped the device stopped working

Wow I hadn't heard of that theory but it must be right as nothing has ever worked again once you see the smoke :D

Apart from the Magic Smoke, the other symptom is the nasty niff. I've found that this lasts longer and usually before the Magic Smoke.

On a slightly more serious note. Don't forget that each piece of rolling stock will need insulated axels too. I think you need to decide on a gauge then see what is available for it.

Good point, but I would have the live track at the end of a siding,e.g. loco shed.
